Fort Lee NJ, the Korean American Association of Greater New York (KAAGNY) has announced its support for a proposed New Jersey bill that would require periodic reviews of law enforcement’s use-of-force policies. This move follows the tragic death of Victoria Lee, a 25-year-old Korean American woman from Fort Lee, who was fatally shot by police during a mental health crisis in July.

In a statement released Wednesday, Terence Park, chairman of KAAGNY’s Human Rights Committee, expressed gratitude for lawmakers’ efforts to advance bill A-4175, saying, “this bill will be an opportunity to save many lives.” The proposed legislation, introduced by Assemblywoman Ellen J. Park of Bergen County, would require New Jersey’s attorney general to review use-of-force policies at least every two years, or more frequently if deemed necessary. These reviews would ensure that policies remain current and, if needed, updated to protect public safety while respecting individual rights.

The incident involving Victoria Lee has brought renewed attention to how law enforcement handles mental health crises. Audio from the 911 calls made by Lee’s brother shows that he initially requested only an ambulance, hoping to avoid police involvement. However, he was informed that police would still be dispatched to ensure the safety of emergency personnel. Lee’s brother made a second call in an attempt to cancel the police response, but was told that mental health calls cannot be canceled.

The legislation outlines key principles the attorney general should prioritize when revising policies, including preserving human life, utilizing non-force measures where possible, ensuring the use of only “objectively reasonable, necessary, and proportional force,” and mandating officers to render medical aid when force is used.

KAAGNY’s Human Rights Committee called for the officers involved in Lee’s death to be placed on administrative leave while the attorney general conducts a full investigation. They are also urging local, state, and federal lawmakers to support the bill, hoping that “Victoria Lee’s sacrifice will serve as an opportunity to save many lives.”

  1. You are responsible for your own safety. Only you can procect your own life. When the police tell you to do something you do it. It doesn’t matter if you think you are right. Your right will not win against the lawful force of a gun. Period. What don’t these people get?

    1. they are idiots, raised by idiots, indoctrinated by idiot schools.
