Madison NJ, a brush fire erupted on Drew University’s campus in Madison on Saturday, prompting a rapid response from local and state fire services. By 1 p.m., the fire had been contained, and by 3:30 p.m., all personnel were cleared from the scene, ensuring the safety of the area.
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service first detected signs of a fire from its Greystone Lookout Tower in Denville around 10 a.m. Both the Madison Fire Department and the Police Department quickly joined the Forest Fire Service at the Drew Forest Preserve to contain the blaze, which spread across an acre and a half of the forest floor.
Borough officials commended the swift response, stating, “Thanks to the rapid, coordinated response of all agencies involved, the fire was successfully confined to an acre and a half section of the forest.” With containment lines firmly established, crews worked on remaining hotspots to prevent any chance of further spread. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and an investigation into the fire’s cause is underway.
Madison Mayor Robert Conley praised the responders, saying, “Their commitment to protecting our community and preserving the Drew Forest is deeply appreciated. We are incredibly fortunate that their expertise prevented the fire from spreading further.”
The Drew Forest Preserve, a 51-acre reserve known for its ecological diversity, is currently in negotiations to be sold to the borough. Thanks to the prompt action, the fire was limited to the forest floor, sparing the tree canopy and preserving critical areas of the forest.
The fire also served as a reminder of the high fire risk due to the dry conditions currently affecting New Jersey. Northern and central New Jersey are now on “extreme” alert for forest fires, while southern regions are on “very high” alert, highlighting the importance of community awareness and fire prevention measures.
