Local Merchants Fear Retribution by Ridgewood’s “Soccer Mom Mafia” on Pedestrian Mall Objection

Ridgewood NJ, despite the hype for the pedestrian mall  for the Central Business District, in a survey conducted by business owners anywhere from 40-50 merchants and restaurants opposed the pedestrian mall . Regardless of what Pamela R. Perron , Councilmember liaison to the Central Business District Advisory Committee claims at Village Council meetings. The word is the naysayers don’t want to go public for fear of retribution .  Both Perron and Jeanie Johnson have access to the survey  despite denials .

When the Ridgewood blog was established we decided to keep comments anonymous primarily  because our experience was that if a parent who objected to anything going on at the schools they and particularly their kids would be targeted by the school board and teachers .

The debate heated up during the Paul Aronsohn (three Amigos) administration when they became obsessed with anyone who would dare criticize them . They even recruited the old owners the Bergen Record to attack and threaten to sue the blog on a regular basis . Rather sad for a dying news paper run by third rate privileged wannabes .

Aronsohn even promoted the idea that I sit around and write all the comments (Approved (129,608) myself. I guess when you are busy sleeping with your colleague  in the council your head is not very clear.

By the way, The Federalist Essays written by Alexander HamiltonJames Madison, and John Jay,originally appeared anonymously under the pseudonym “Publius.” ,just in case you missed history class in 7th grade.

We have also noticed many of the promoters of the pedestrian mall never use the central business district .

The good news for all is that sources tell the blog that there is some sort of a negotiation going on for a pedestrian mall during limited hours which could keep the merchants in business and help the restaurants at the same time .

So that means residents  should do their part and make an effort to support the local business in the Central Business District .

  1. This survey, where is it? No one has seen this mysterious survey except for the mayor. Odd.

Also interesting that, fear of retribution or not, not a single business owner has come to a council meeting to voice any opposition. Not one.

As much as we want a thriving CBD, the Council serves the residents. Not the businesses.

    1. clearly you don’t know anything about running a business , go out an run errands in the CBD and see how difficult it is now just to go pick something up and leave , the objections are obvious. Both Pam and Jeanie have access to the survey yet choice to pretend it does not exist . The congestion is bad enough . People who never go to the CBD should not be involved in the decision.

      1. “People who never go to the CBD should not be involved in the decision.”

If people who knew nothing about the things for which they advocate, we would be a lot better off.

    2. First, businesses pay taxes without inflating the school population. Second, commercial properties are typically assessed at a higher amount when compared to similarly sized residential properties. And finally, with the current cancel climate I don’t blame any business owner for not wanting to show their face at any meeting.

  2. Those that want the plaza are doing it to add value to the multi family projects not individual home owners. It is very clear this is about real estate development. One of the people pushing it is an owner of a struggling new restaurant.

I feel for the businesses that lost foot traffic and know many struggled when the plaza was in place. The cost, congestion, and limited use are all ignored by those pushing it.

    1. This seems counter intuitive to me. I would think a pedestrian mall would increase foot traffic and help business. Maybe we should try it out again next spring now that the ridiculous COVID lockdown and mask rules are lifted to see if it helps or hurts. My personal experience with pedestrian malls has been extremely positive.

  3. What about the residents. We don’t want more traffic we end up not going into town at all. We can’t get take out or do quick errands. Only people with special interests, land lords, some business owners like Greek to me. I stopped going there when i saw how dirty their bathrooms are . And glen Rock and other towns don’t have meters. Outdoor dining is nice. Close the street once. Don’t make it a thing just for JJ and soccer Mom

    1. Just Shut Up and Pay Up.

  4. Do whatever you want with the pedestrian mall. How about we focus on reigning in the School budget and lowering taxes?

    1. The Council has nothing to do with the school budget. The council only deals with about 35% of your taxes.

  5. Now the election is being called a proxy for pedestrian dining. What about development? For those with a restaurant or real estate interest (or both) in the downtown pedestrian dining and more high density housing are the goal. Road Street and the Valley Hospital site are ripe for development.

“It looks so pretty” is not on the agenda of the businesses that will benefit.

  6. Saraceno has taken over the town. It smells like Aronsohn is involved too. Is that possible..?

Back in the early 70’s, when I was doing my MBA, one of my professors was the head of the Bergen Democrats. His opinion, stated to us, was that he would not insult a dead fish by wrapping it in the “Wretched.”

  11. Pretty sure the council has overridden the actual budget voting, so the council does have an impact.
