Westwood NJ, the Governing Body of Westwood assembled on Sand Road, to unveil a bronze plaque dedicating the crosswalk next to Mt. Zion Church to longtime resident and church elder – Vivian Stubbs.
The crosswalk was conceived by Ms. Stubbs and was implemented largely through the efforts of Council President Chris Montana. Chris worked with the Borough Engineer and with our DPW Superintendent Rick Woods, to check all the regulatory boxes required by NJDOT.
The crosswalk was part of a long evolution of Sand Road public improvements, which Ms. Stubbs and others had initiated in collaboration with the borough.
According to Westwood Mayor Ray Arroyo , ” In her remarks, Vivian recounted how Sand Road got its name. It had been an unimproved road comprised mostly of sand! Until she and another Sand Road resident, Ms. Dufont, petitioned the borough to pave the road! Ms. Stubbs noted that the unintended consequence of the newly paved road was its instant attraction as a cut through from Old Hook Road , to Harrington Ave …for speeders Determined to slow the increased traffic, Ms. Stubbs pressed for speed bumps that were subsequently installed. The crosswalk is a logical extension of Vivian’s ongoing work to improve public safety in Westwood.”
Arroyo said , “Naming it in her honor is a fitting way to acknowledge Ms. Stubbs decades of engaged collaboration with her elected representatives.
As I’d mentioned to her (and to Hadyn’s family on Saturday) “When you truly love Westwood, Westwood has a tendency to love you right back!”
