Mahwah NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of AMEL MERSALI (DOB: 7/18/1990; single; unemployed) of 2102 Hawthorne Lane, Mahwah, NJ. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Mahwah Police Department under the direction of Chief Stephen Jaffe.

On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at approximately 4:01 p.m., the Mahwah Police Department responded to a residential fire at 2102 Hawthorne Lane in Mahwah, which is located in a multi-unit condominium building. Responding officers observed heavy smoke coming from the residence and observed fire in the bedroom, which was ultimately suppressed by the Mahwah Fire Department. An investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Mahwah Police Department revealed that AMEL MERSALI had intentionally set the fire inside the residence.

As a result of the investigation, AMEL MERSALI was charged with second-degree aggravated arson, N.J.S.A. 2C:17-1a(3); and third-degree causing or risking widespread injury or damage, N.J.S.A. 2C:17-2. MERSALI was transported to Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus for further treatment and evaluation. Her first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ will be scheduled upon her release from Bergen New Bridge Medical Center.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and he would also like to thank the Mahwah Police Department for its assistance in this investigation.

  1. Remind me to never buy a condo
Bad enough when the neighbor is cooking fish or falafel stinking up the place

  2. Or worse anything to do with curry.

  3. Motive is obvious.
