Mahwah NJ, A serious multi-vehicle crash shut down lanes and caused severe traffic delays on Interstate 287 North in Mahwah on Saturday afternoon.
According to New Jersey State Police, troopers responded at approximately 1:15 p.m. to the northbound lanes south of Exit 66 (Route 17) following a collision involving a dump truck carrying rocks and two SUVs.
Overturned Truck Spills Rocks Across Highway
The crash caused the dump truck to overturn, scattering its heavy load of rocks across the roadway. The initial debris spill forced the complete closure of all northbound lanes, according to emergency traffic updates from 511NJ.
Units from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) joined state troopers at the scene to manage traffic diversion and coordinate roadway cleanup operations.
Multiple Injuries Reported
At least four individuals were transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution. Officials reported that the driver of the dump truck sustained injuries, while occupants of the two SUVs—which included a family traveling in one vehicle—complained of pain following the impact. State Police have not yet released a final count of total passengers involved.
Traffic Delays & Lane Closures
By 2:30 p.m., emergency crews managed to clear and reopen the left northbound lane. However, remaining lanes stayed closed well into the afternoon, creating significant traffic backups approaching Exit 66 around 3:00 p.m.
The exact cause of the dump truck rollover remains under investigation by New Jersey State Police.
