Teaneck NJ, The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has unveiled the final design report for the highly anticipated $189.4 million replacement of the Route 4 bridge over the Hackensack River. This transformative project aims to modernize the 91-year-old structure and a key half-mile stretch of highway connecting Hackensack and Teaneck.

Key Highlights of the Project

The detailed 42-page report summarizes insights from a Local Officials Meeting held on December 2, 2023. Officials from Bergen County, Hackensack, Teaneck, and River Edge gathered to discuss the project, which is slated to begin in January 2026 and will span 38 to 40 months.

Notable goals and improvements include:

  • Widened bridge and approach roadways.
  • 15-foot auxiliary lanes in both directions for enhanced traffic flow.
  • Six-foot-wide sidewalks with protective barriers for pedestrian safety.
  • Improved access to existing bus stops and local businesses.
  • Maintenance of three lanes in both directions throughout most of the construction period.
  • Short-term detours with no long-term disruptions.

Property and Community Impact

Approximately one-third of an acre of land will be acquired from Gaylord, Window, and Milton Votee parks to facilitate the updates. The project also includes temporary easements near Farleigh Dickinson University (FDU), impacting areas around the university’s baseball complex and Route 4-adjacent properties.

Despite these adjustments, NJDOT officials have emphasized their commitment to minimizing local road disruptions and preserving access to businesses and public transportation.

Enhanced Traffic Flow and Safety Features

The updated bridge and surrounding highway will feature longer acceleration and deceleration lanes, wider lane widths, and streamlined access points. These changes aim to reduce congestion and improve overall safety for motorists and pedestrians alike.

Next Steps

NJDOT is actively gathering feedback from local and county officials throughout the winter. A Public Information Center is also planned, allowing residents and stakeholders to provide input and learn more about the project’s timeline and scope.

This significant infrastructure upgrade represents a major investment in the region’s future, ensuring safer and more efficient travel for decades to come.

  1. Long, long overdue. My estimate based on living here for 40 years? Completion in 2035. I’ll be dead.
