Hackensack NJ, at least eight immigrants being held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at Bergen County Jail in New Jersey are participating in a hunger strike to protest conditions at the facility and demand to be released. Local activists say the hunger strike is in its 18th day. ICE would not comment on how long the immigrants have stopped eating. Family members and activists who have spoken to detainees claim conditions inside the facility are “dire.”

In effort to address the concerns of the detainees on hunger strike, Sheriff Cureton visited their dorm to hear their complaints. He examined the combination sink/fountain/toilet apparatus and the majority were fully operational. Cleanliness of the dorms is maintained by the detainees and they are provided the necessary cleaning supplies to perform those duties. We have confirmed that many inmates claiming to be on a hunger strike have actually been eating. They are medically evaluated daily and none are suffering from malnutrition.

On Saturday evening The Bergen County Rapid Deployment Fore was dispatched . Police and Marxist BLM “mostly peaceful protesters” collided outside the Bergen County Jail as detainees in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody continued a hunger strike in “protest of living conditions inside the facility”.
The Bergen County Jail serves as a central reception and processing center for pre-trial male and female adult inmates whose incarceration is necessary to ensure a court appearance. Since 2001, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office has also held a standing contract with the U.S. Marshals Service to provide detention beds for federal detainees at the Bergen County Jail.

With more than 280 Correction Officers and 1,150 beds, this around-the-clock operation is one of the state’s finest correctional facilities.

The major operational management philosophy utilized within the Bergen County Jail is Direct Supervision Management. Direct Supervision, utilizing the principals of direct officer to inmate interface and barrier free design, has proven to be an effective method of control, improving supervision, reducing violence, ensuring a safer more humane environment for both inmates and staff while keeping the cost to the taxpayers down.

Technology is state-of-the-art in the facility, featuring computer control of all inmate housing areas, an integrated perimeter security system, a site-wide duress/panic alarm system and a computerized Center Control.

The facility is designed and is operated in accordance with constitutional standards, to meet accreditation set by the American Correctional Association and the New Jersey State Department of Corrections. In addition, the Jail meets standards for health care established by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.

  1. Wow! What a concept, brake the law and serve jail time. It would be less expensive to send them back to their homeland.

  2. Remember Bobby Sands. 74 days.

  3. Nobody in the picture looks like they go hungry.
    The protest doesn’t look peaceful.
No ICE contract leads to layoffs of Sheriff Officers, and trouble paying back the bonds used for new jail.
How about some details on those lovely prisoners in detention.

  4. I guess they don’t like the bologna.

  5. Give them pp&g , or cheese

  6. Based on the photo it looks like the police won that skirmish.
