Early Morning Chaos on Memorial Day
Hasbrouck Heights NJ, in the early hours of Memorial Day, Hasbrouck Heights Police, with the assistance of several mutual aid partners, arrested Albert Fischetta III, a man from Toms River, after a violent altercation. The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. on Monday, May 27, 2024, sparking a significant police response.
Initial 911 Call
The ordeal began when a woman called 911, reporting that her boyfriend had jumped out of her vehicle on Terrace Avenue and was possibly armed with a knife. She also informed the dispatcher that he had taken PCP (phencyclidine), a powerful hallucinogenic drug. According to Hasbrouck Heights Police Lieutenant John Behr, the man had crossed into Hackensack and entered a convenience store.
Police Response and Confrontation
Hackensack Police were promptly notified, and Officer Olivo was the first to encounter Fischetta in a parking lot. Fischetta, however, refused to comply with the officer’s attempts to engage him and became verbally aggressive. He then began walking into traffic, escalating the situation.
Concerned for Fischetta’s safety and that of passing motorists, Officer Olivo attempted to restrain him, which led to a physical struggle. Officer Woodbridge soon arrived on the scene and called for backup. Officer Armeli, along with officers from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, Hackensack City Police, and Wood-Ridge Police, responded to assist.
Escalation and Arrest
Despite multiple officers on the scene, Fischetta resisted arrest violently, making it difficult for them to take him into custody. Eventually, they subdued him, although he continued to act aggressively towards the officers.
The woman who made the initial 911 call later informed officers that Fischetta had jumped out of her moving vehicle without warning, adding another layer of danger to the incident.
Aftermath
Two Hasbrouck Heights Police Department officers, along with Fischetta, were transported to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment and were subsequently released. Fischetta was then taken to the Bergen County Jail, where he awaits a court hearing.
Charges
Albert Fischetta III faces multiple charges, including:
- Throwing bodily fluid at certain law enforcement officers
- Resisting arrest
- Two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer
- Terroristic threats
