Ridgewood NJ, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) is making waves in the tech and political worlds with its decision to replace its third-party fact-checking program with a community-driven system inspired by Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter). CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the change in a video early Tuesday, signaling a shift in Meta’s approach to content moderation and free speech as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office.

Meta Embraces Community Notes for Content Moderation

“We’re going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with community notes, similar to X, starting in the U.S.,” Zuckerberg explained. He cited widespread issues with the current system, including “too many mistakes and too much censorship.”

The new program will debut later this year across Meta’s platforms, including Threads, Facebook, and Instagram. As it rolls out, the current fact-checking infrastructure will be phased out, and trust and safety team members will be relocated from California to Texas and other U.S. locations.

Modeled after X’s Community Notes (formerly Birdwatch), the system will empower users to provide contextual information on posts, fostering a collaborative approach to combating misinformation.

Political Implications of Meta’s Move

Meta’s decision to adopt a community-driven moderation model comes amid its efforts to rebuild relationships with conservatives, including Trump. For years, Meta faced criticism from Republican lawmakers over alleged censorship on Facebook and Instagram. Trump himself has previously labeled Facebook “the enemy of the people.”

The timing of the announcement aligns with Meta’s warm gestures toward Trump, including Zuckerberg’s recent $1 million pledge to Trump’s inaugural fund.

“There is a real opportunity here, with President Trump coming into office, to get back to values of free expression,” said Joel Kaplan, Meta’s newly-appointed head of global affairs and a top Republican strategist.

Meta Welcomes New Board Members, Including UFC’s Dana White

In another strategic move, Meta added UFC CEO Dana White to its board of directors on Monday. White, a Trump ally and personal friend of Zuckerberg, has been outspoken in defending free speech, further underscoring Meta’s shift in direction.

From Fact-Checking to Free Speech: A New Chapter for Meta

Meta’s transition away from traditional fact-checking marks a significant shift in its approach to content governance. While the move has drawn praise from conservative lawmakers, critics warn that it could lead to the proliferation of unchecked misinformation.

As Meta continues to refine its policies under Zuckerberg’s leadership, the rollout of community-driven moderation will be a closely watched development, shaping not only the future of the company but also its influence on public discourse.

  1. can Zuckerberg be trusted? With Dana White on the board, maybe. Then Zuckerberg could buy a shirt!

    1. No, he can’t, which is why everyone would do well to be skeptical.

  2. New era of free hate speech. Other kinds of free speech were never threatened.
