Ridgewood NJ, residents in North Jersey were alarmed on Tuesday morning when they felt their homes shaking, prompting many to speculate on social media about the possibility of an earthquake similar to the one that rattled the area in April. However, by the end of the day, NASA offered a different explanation.
On Tuesday evening, NASA revealed that a meteor had likely passed near New York City around 11:17 a.m. The space agency estimated that the meteor traversed over the Statue of Liberty before disintegrating 29 miles above midtown Manhattan.
Between 11:15 and 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, several East Coast residents reported witnessing a fireball, with sightings logged by the American Meteor Society. The event coincides with the Perseid meteor shower, which became visible in the area on Sunday and will continue into August.
Local media reported sightings of the fireball, accompanied by booms and shaking sensations, between 10 a.m. and noon EDT on Tuesday. The American Meteor Society received multiple reports, enabling a rough determination of the meteor’s trajectory. Based on the data, it is estimated that the fireball was first sighted at an altitude of 49 miles above Upper Bay, east of Greenville Yard. Traveling at a speed of 34,000 miles per hour, the meteor moved slightly east of north at a steep angle of 18 degrees from vertical, passing over the Statue of Liberty before breaking apart above midtown Manhattan.
