PARAMUS, NJ — A high-speed pursuit spanning multiple North Jersey towns ended in a dramatic crash and a foot chase on Route 17 early Sunday morning. Police say the suspect, a New York man, was eventually discovered by officers while attempting to hide under a parked vehicle.
The incident began around 12:55 a.m. on Sunday, March 22, when Upper Saddle River Police alerted surrounding departments of a white 2014 Toyota RAV4 that had failed to stop for motor vehicle violations and was eluding officers.
The Pursuit: From Upper Saddle River to Maywood
Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti reported that Sgt. Michael Mordaga spotted the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on Route 17 near the Westfield Garden State Plaza.
While the driver initially appeared to be traveling at a normal speed, the situation escalated rapidly once police positioned themselves to identify the driver. According to authorities:
-
The Escalation: The driver, identified as 22-year-old Izayah Mansfield of Freeville, NY, accelerated away from police near the Farview Avenue overpass.
-
The Crash: Moments later, Mansfield lost control of the SUV, slamming into the center median barrier in Maywood.
-
The Foot Chase: Following the impact, Mansfield allegedly leaped from the car, crossed the median into the northbound lanes of Route 17, and fled into a nearby commercial property.
Hidden in Plain Sight
The foot pursuit took officers over multiple fences as Mansfield attempted to evade capture. The search ended when Officer Hugo Rodriguez-Pena located the suspect tucked underneath a parked vehicle on the commercial lot.
Mansfield was taken into custody without further incident and transported by ambulance to New Bridge Medical Center for a wellness evaluation.
Charges Pending
The Maywood Police Department is currently leading the investigation into the crash itself, while both Paramus and Maywood police have charges pending against Mansfield for eluding and various motor vehicle violations.
