From Midnight Gunshots to Identity Theft: How a Rochelle Park Home Invasion Exposed an Organized Fraud Ring

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, What started as a terrifying, midnight armed robbery quickly morphed into a complex, multi-agency investigation that has landed five men behind bars.

In a newly unsealed series of indictments, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella revealed how a violent Rochelle Park home invasion inadvertently blew the cover on a sophisticated identity theft operation operating right under the noses of local residents.

Here is the inside story of the wild pursuit, the multi-state SWAT takedowns, and the bizarre twist that completely flipped the script for Bergen County detectives.

3:00 AM Gunshots Spark High-Speed Pursuit

The chaos began at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. Rochelle Park Police officers rushed to a private residence on Howard Avenue following frantic reports of a home invasion in progress.

When officers arrived, the scene was chaotic: gunshots had already been fired, and a violent physical struggle was actively underway between the home’s occupants and armed intruders.

As backup units swarmed the neighborhood, a suspicious vehicle was spotted fleeing the immediate area. Local police, with assistance from surrounding towns, initiated a high-speed pursuit of the vehicle. However, the suspects managed to temporarily evade capture, forcing officers to terminate the chase after losing sight of the car.

The Plot Twist: What Was Inside the House?

With a violent crime scene on their hands, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Squad joined the Rochelle Park Police Department to process the home. That’s when the investigation took a highly unexpected turn.

Detectives quickly realized that the home invasion wasn’t a random occurrence. The residence was being used as a short-term rental property, and its occupants weren’t just innocent victims—they were allegedly running a massive criminal enterprise of their own.

Just 24 hours after the shootout, on March 11, 2026, detectives officially discovered that two of the occupants, Marius Fica (55) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Sorin L. Pavel (39) of Sunnyside, New York, were utilizing the short-term rental as a base of operations for a massive credit card fraud and identity theft ring.

Multi-Agency SWAT Takedowns Across Tristate Area

While one team of detectives mapped out the fraud network, another relentlessly tracked the violent home invaders. By April 1, 2026, police officially identified and charged the three primary suspects behind the armed break-in.

What followed was a coordinated, multi-state law enforcement sweep to bring them in:

  • Raudel Cangas (41) of Linden, NJ: Arrested on April 2 with the assistance of the Union County Regional SWAT Team. A court-authorized raid of his home uncovered a massive cache of weapons, including multiple handguns, ammunition, a rifle, and tactical accessories.

  • Kelvin F. Morel (37) of Fair Lawn, NJ: Arrested on April 2 by the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team. Though initially released pending a detention hearing, further investigation prompted the Prosecutor’s Office to successfully petition the court to revoke his release. He was ordered back to the Bergen County Jail on June 12.

  • Miguel Sanchez (43) of the Bronx, NY: The suspect linked directly to the fleeing getaway vehicle was tracked down in New York by the FBI’s Violent Threat Initiative and the NYPD. He was held at the Eric M. Taylor Correctional Center before being extradited back to New Jersey.

Grand Jury Unseals 25 Combined Counts

In late June 2026, a Bergen County Grand Jury unsealed two separate, massive indictments cementing the charges against all five individuals.

The Home Invasion Suspects (18-Count Indictment)

Cangas, Morel, and Sanchez face severe felony charges, including:

  • First-degree home invasion burglary

  • First-degree armed robbery (2 counts)

  • Second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun (2 counts)

  • Aggravated assault and resisting arrest by eluding

Note: Raudel Cangas faces three additional second-degree charges for being a “certain person not to have firearms” due to prior criminal history.

The Fraud Ring Suspects (7-Count Indictment)

Fica and Pavel face felony counts stemming from the tech setup found inside the short-term rental:

  • Third-degree possession of incomplete credit cards

  • Fourth-degree possession of a scanning device with intent to defraud

  • Multiple counts of fourth-degree possession of false government documents

All five defendants remain inside the legal system pending further court action. Prosecutor Musella emphasized that these charges are merely accusations, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
