Ridgewood NJ, on February 22nd, Odysseus achieved a successful landing on the Moon, marking a significant milestone as the first private lunar lander and the first from the United States since 1972. Developed by Intuitive Machines, the lander now sits approximately 300 kilometers from the lunar south pole, an area believed to potentially harbor ice deposits. Prior to landing, Odysseus encountered a malfunction necessitating a software patch, which was successfully implemented just hours before touchdown. It is slated to collect valuable data for up to seven days, until nightfall descends upon the landing site.
Additionally, observers may have noticed the Snow Moon gracing the night sky this month, as per the Old Farmer’s Almanac. This full moon of February adds its ethereal glow to the celestial tableau.
However, not all news from the space exploration front is without its challenges. Houston-based Intuitive Machines saw its shares plummet over 30% on Monday morning after announcing that its Odysseus moon lander had tipped over and was resting on its side. Despite this setback, the company confirmed that all but one of its six NASA science and technology payloads remained operational and positioned correctly for communication. Unfortunately, the payload containing an art piece by artist Jeff Koons was affected by the tilt. Nonetheless, the other payloads are expected to continue their scientific missions as planned.
