Ridgewood NJ, NASA astronauts Sunita “Suni” Williams and Butch Wilmore have safely returned to Earth after an extended nine-month stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The duo splashed down off the Florida coast aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, accompanied by NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.

Mission Extended Due to Starliner Issues

Williams and Wilmore originally launched in June 2024 on Boeing’s Starliner for what was planned as a 10-day mission. However, technical issues, including helium leaks and propulsion problems, forced them to remain on the ISS for an extended duration. While waiting for their return, they fully integrated into the station’s crew, conducting scientific research and daily operations.

Record-Breaking Journey in Space

During their unexpected stay, the astronauts:
Completed 4,576 orbits around Earth
Traveled over 121 million miles
Contributed to ongoing research and experiments

Williams’ cumulative time in space now totals 608 days, making her the second most-experienced U.S. astronaut, following Peggy Whitson.

Post-Mission Evaluations Underway

Upon landing, the astronauts were transported to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where they will undergo medical evaluations to assess the effects of their prolonged spaceflight.

  3. Cut all funding to NASA. They used to be great but now it’s just a scam. They can’t even get back to the moon. Incompetent. Cut all funding to NASA and turn it all over the SPACEX. Problem solved. Thank me later. Onward to Mars.
