Ridgewood NJ, the intricate network of water infrastructure remains largely unseen, yet its importance to everyday life cannot be overstated. Recently, Ridgewood Water’s Distribution Crews were on full display, showcasing the dedication and skill required to maintain this “hidden infrastructure” while ensuring uninterrupted service for residents.
This image gives a glimpse into the challenges of maintaining the “hidden infrastructure”. In this picture, you will see the repair clamp placed by our crews just a few inches below an old gas line, with the new gas line located less than two feet away
One such instance occurred on Prospect St. in Glen Rock, where crews worked tirelessly to repair a main break while under immense pressure. Despite the challenges posed by the aging infrastructure and the proximity to other utility lines, such as gas lines, the team executed the repair flawlessly, preserving service for nearby residents. This glimpse into the complexities of water infrastructure maintenance underscores the critical role played by diligent crews in safeguarding our water supply.
As part of Ridgewood Water’s ongoing capital improvement plan, significant upgrades are underway to enhance the resilience and reliability of the water distribution system. In Wyckoff, along Carlton Rd. between Weymouth Dr. and Covington Pl., as well as along Hartung Dr. terminating at the Ridgewood Water wellfield, a water main replacement project is underway. These infrastructure investments are essential for maintaining water quality, reducing leaks, and minimizing service disruptions for residents.
Ridgewood Water’s proactive Lead Service Line Replacement (LSLR) Program exemplifies the commitment to public health and safety. With crews actively identifying and replacing lead service lines throughout the system, the program aims to mitigate the risk of lead exposure in drinking water. Utilizing specialized equipment, such as trucks equipped to dig small holes near the Curb Stop Valve, crews can accurately identify lead components and swiftly replace them, reducing the potential for lead leaching into treated water. Remarkably, the program has achieved significant progress, with 93% of all service lines successfully identified to date.

The maintenance and improvement of water infrastructure are vital endeavors that require careful planning, investment, and expertise. Ridgewood Water’s unwavering dedication to ensuring the reliability, safety, and quality of our water supply serves as a testament to their commitment to serving the community. As we continue to navigate the complexities of water infrastructure management, let us recognize and appreciate the efforts of those working behind the scenes to keep our taps flowing and our communities thriving.
