New Jersey EV Mandate is Unaffordable for NJ Families, Limits Choice, and is Unworkable for the State’s Economy and Energy Infrastructure

Trenton NJ, on behalf of the Fuel Merchants Association of New Jersey, Eric DeGesero released the following statement in regards to NJDEP‘s comment period on Advanced Clean Cars II regulations:

“NJDEP’s proposed rule—banning the sale of new gas-powered cars—is unaffordable for NJ families and unworkable for our state’s economy and energy infrastructure.

“Additionally, we must point out that NJDEP’s rule contradicts Governor Murphy’s stated intent on mandating EVs. The Governor and his staff have repeatedly said that New Jersey consumers will have a choice to buy a new, gas-powered vehicle from another state. However, NJDEP’s proposed rule is clear—NJ drivers won’t have any choice at all.

“In fact, the NJDEP rule prohibits the registration of any new non-CARB certified vehicle after 2027. Beginning in 2035, the only new CARB certified vehicle will be an electric vehicle (EV).

“Yet, according to multiple statements by Governor Murphy and his top energy advisor, it is only the sale or purchase of new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles that will be disallowed in New Jersey—not the registration.

“To reflect the Administration’s publicly stated intent, NJDEP must either amend the rule upon adoption or withdraw and re-propose it.

“And finally, the state Legislature should exercise their status as a co-equal branch of government to stop this unaffordable mandate that will result in fewer New Jerseyans being able to drive a car.”
