JERSEY CITY, NJ — In a major pivot ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Sherrill administration has officially halted plans for a massive, centralized “Fan Festival” at Liberty State Park. Instead, the state is betting on a grassroots approach, launching a $5 million local grant initiative designed to bring the World Cup spirit directly to main streets across New Jersey.

From Mega-Festival to Local Celebration

The original plan for Liberty State Park envisioned 40,000 daily visitors enjoying concerts and matches against the backdrop of the Statue of Liberty. However, citing concerns over accessibility for New Jersey residents and the desire for broader economic impact, the NY/NJ Host Committee and the N.J. Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) are decentralizing the party.

The new strategy aims to empower local small businesses and municipalities, ensuring the “once-in-a-generation” economic boom isn’t confined to a single park.

Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco posted on Facebook: “I welcome the decision from Governor Mikie Sherrill‘s administration to shift away from a single Fan Fest at Liberty State Park and instead support local fan activations tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Moving events into our communities will drive stronger attendance, create a better fan experience, and make it easier for residents and visitors alike to take part in this historic moment.

Bergen County is ready.
On Sunday, June 14th, we’re partnering with the Meadowlands Chamber of Commerce to host our own World Cup Fan Festival featuring:
⚽ Germany vs. Curaçao – 1:00 PM
⚽ Japan vs. Netherlands – 4:00 PM
The Flag Cities program we are part of will ensure connectivity to the incoming teams and the matches being played at MetLife Stadium, helping draw visitors throughout the region — not just to one centralized location.
This approach also gives our local businesses a meaningful opportunity to participate — something that would have been far more difficult at a single site.
The 2026 World Cup is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. Let’s make sure every corner of New Jersey — especially Bergen County — benefits.”

How the $5M World Cup Grant Program Works

The NJEDA will oversee a portal—expected to open by the end of February—to distribute funds quickly. With only 113 days until the opening match on June 11, the state is prioritizing speed and proven results.

  • Who Can Apply: Local organizations and municipalities with a history of successful community events.

  • Event Scales: Grants will support everything from large-scale fan zones to small-town watch parties and street fairs.

  • Flexibility: Funding can be used for infrastructure, security, entertainment, or specialized World Cup activations.

Top Contenders for New NJ Fan Zones

With Liberty State Park off the table, several high-profile locations are emerging as frontrunners for major activations:

Location Why it Works Potential Challenges
American Dream Proven track record during the Club World Cup. Massive crowds and parking limitations.
Sports Illustrated Stadium Right next to Harrison PATH; easy transit access. Coordinating with existing Red Bulls events.
The “Flag Cities” Turnkey sites in Hudson and Bergen counties with Goya sponsorship. Scaling up for 39 days of activation.
NJ Main Streets Newark’s Ironbound and Elizabeth’s Morris St. offer authentic culture. Managing local traffic and security.

The “Sherrill Shift”: Why the Change Matters

By pivoting to a multi-location model, Governor Sherrill is addressing long-standing requests from groups like the Statewide Hispanic Chamber to ensure small businesses see the “World Cup boom.” While the Liberty State Park site offered iconic views, the new plan ensures that fans from North to South Jersey can participate in the festivities without the bottleneck of a single venue.

“The goal is to ensure that more communities and more small businesses throughout the state can be a part of this multi-billion-dollar event,” said a source familiar with the plan.

Essential Information for NJ Towns
