TRENTON, NJ — New Jersey is stepping up once again in the fight against environmental challenges. On October 9–10, 2025, the state will host its first-ever PFAS Summit, bringing together leaders from across academia, government, and key industries to address the growing threat of PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.”

The event will unite experts from the water, wastewater, air, waste, and site remediation sectors to share research, discuss new technologies, and coordinate strategies. The goal: reduce exposure to PFAS and protect public health and the environment.

What to Expect at the 2025 PFAS Summit

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will highlight its newly released report, “Forever No More: New Jersey’s Commitment to PFAS Action.” The strategy outlines the state’s progress to date and lays out a blueprint for next steps, including:

  • Reducing PFAS exposure across multiple sectors

  • Advancing soil and groundwater protections

  • Strengthening drinking water standards

  • Expanding fish consumption advisories

“This is about coordination, innovation, and real progress,” DEP officials said, emphasizing that collaboration across industries will be key to tackling this widespread issue.

A Multi-Sector Effort Against “Forever Chemicals”

The summit, co-hosted by the DEP and its partners, will bring together some of the most influential organizations in environmental science and public health, including:

  • NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology)

  • New Jersey Water Environment Association

  • Licensed Site Remediation Professionals Association

  • Northeast Waste Management Officials’ Association

  • NESCAUM (Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management)

  • American Water Works Association

By connecting these groups, New Jersey aims to set the standard for PFAS response nationwide.

Why PFAS Action Matters Now

PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” are linked to serious health risks and are extremely difficult to break down in the environment. They’ve been found in drinking water, soil, and even food sources. New Jersey has already led the way with some of the toughest standards in the country — and the upcoming summit will build on that momentum.

  1. Key speaker P. Vagianos will argue that there is no problem and in fact we need more of the stuff.
