Paramus NJ, A late-night street racing incident on one of Bergen County’s busiest highways has resulted in serious injuries for an innocent driver and felony charges for a New York man.
According to officials from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, a 20-year-old driver was arrested following a reckless, high-speed collision in the southbound lanes of Route 17 in Paramus, New Jersey.
The crash, which occurred near the crucial Ridgewood Avenue exit, highlights the ongoing dangers of illegal street racing on local North Jersey corridors.
How the High-Speed Collision Unfolded
The incident began at approximately 9:55 PM on Tuesday, April 28, when authorities say two vehicles were actively racing down the highway.
-
The Suspect: Aiden C. Perez, 20, of Washingtonville, New York, was operating a 2015 Audi at a recklessly high rate of speed.
-
The Maneuver: While attempting an aggressive lane change amid the race, Perez lost total control of his vehicle.
-
The Impact: The out-of-control Audi slammed directly into the rear of a 2019 Jeep, causing severe damage to both vehicles.
Injuries Escalated to Serious After Medical Review
Paramus Police Department officers quickly responded to the multi-vehicle wreck. Initially, both Perez and the female driver of the Jeep were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that first responders believed to be minor.
However, subsequent in-depth medical evaluations revealed a much darker reality. Doctors determined that the female driver had actually sustained serious, debilitating injuries from the impact.
Because of the severity of her condition, the investigation was immediately elevated, bringing in the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Fatal Accident Investigation Unit.
Arrest and Severe Legal Charges Filed
Following a month-long investigation into the high-speed wreck, detectives officially arrested Perez on Wednesday, May 27.
The Bergen County Prosecutor announced that Perez faces multiple criminal counts, including:
-
Second-degree Aggravated Assault
-
Fourth-degree Assault by Auto
-
Multiple related motor vehicle offenses
Perez was processed and initially remanded to the Bergen County Jail. Following an appearance in Bergen County Superior Court, he was subsequently released pending his next scheduled court date.
Local prosecutors extended their thanks to the Paramus Police Department, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, and the Norwood Police Department for their collaborative work in reconstructing the crash scene.
