The Future of NJ Blue Ribbon Schools: What Happens in 2026?
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, For decades, the National Blue Ribbon was the ultimate “gold star” for New Jersey schools, signaling academic excellence or massive strides in closing achievement gaps. But as we move into 2026, parents and educators are asking a critical question: Is the program officially dead, or is New Jersey keeping the tradition alive?
Following the federal government’s decision to discontinue the national program in 2025, the future of this prestigious honor now rests solely with the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE).
Will NJ Name Blue Ribbon Schools in 2026?
As of late March 2026, the answer is: It’s under review.
While the NJDOE honored 11 schools in late 2025 (utilizing data gathered before the federal sunset), the path forward is unpaved. According to NJDOE spokesperson Michael Yaple, the state is currently evaluating its options.
“No decision has been made regarding the establishment of a state-level program to replace the national process,” Yaple stated on March 27, 2026.
This means that while the “National” Blue Ribbon is a thing of the past, a “New Jersey State Blue Ribbon” could potentially take its place—if the state decides the administrative effort is worth the prestige.

-
Instructional Quality: The rigorous application process required schools to prove high-level student performance and innovative teaching.
-
Community Pride: It serves as a benchmark for local school boards and administrators.
