SALEM COUNTY, NJ — In a historic move that signals a massive shift in the Garden State’s energy landscape, Governor Mikie Sherrill officially signed legislation today ending New Jersey’s 43-year moratorium on new nuclear power plants.
Standing at PSEG’s nuclear complex in Salem County, Sherrill declared that the state is ready to lead a national “nuclear renaissance,” prioritizing energy affordability and a carbon-free future.
Breaking the 1980s Deadlock
The newly signed bill removes a long-standing legal hurdle from the early 1980s that effectively halted nuclear expansion. Previously, New Jersey law required all radioactive waste to be disposed of offsite—a logistical and political nightmare that stalled development for decades.
The new legislation recognizes a critical shift in technology: modern onsite storage is now considered safe and viable by both engineers and state regulators.
“If we’re truly going to meet all of our energy needs, we need an all-of-the-above approach,” Governor Sherrill stated. “Nuclear power is a cornerstone of that strategy.”
New Nuclear Task Force Launched
To ensure this “renaissance” is handled with transparency and expertise, Sherrill announced the first members of a dedicated Nuclear Redevelopment Task Force.
The group is comprised of leaders from:
-
State Government: Focused on regulatory compliance and safety.
-
The Business Sector: Driving investment in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and local jobs.
-
Environmental Circles: Ensuring the transition aligns with NJ’s aggressive clean energy goals.
What This Means for New Jersey Residents
For taxpayers and utility customers, this move is about energy independence and affordability. By diversifying the grid with nuclear, offshore wind, and solar, the administration aims to stabilize fluctuating energy prices while hitting net-zero emissions targets.
While New Jersey has long relied on its existing nuclear fleet in South Jersey, this signature opens the door for next-generation reactors—which are smaller, more efficient, and easier to site than the massive cooling towers of the past.
