Sea Isle City NJ, South Jersey is set to receive a record-breaking $99 million investment for beach replenishment and coastal protection. Announced by Congressman Jeff Van Drew, this federal funding from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers marks the largest investment in New Jersey’s shoreline since the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy—and the largest ever in a year without a severe coastal storm.
Which Jersey Shore Towns are Getting New Sand?
The $99 million “Army Corps” windfall is earmarked for critical replenishment projects across several major vacation destinations. If you live in or visit these towns, expect to see significant shoreline stabilization:
-
Ocean City
-
Strathmere
-
Sea Isle City
-
Avalon
-
Stone Harbor
“This is a huge investment for our shoreline,” said Congressman Van Drew. “This level of investment means stronger protection, more stability, and peace of mind for our shore communities.”
Beyond the Sand: Dredging and Navigation Upgrades
The investment isn’t limited to the beaches. An additional $5 million has been secured for vital dredging projects to keep South Jersey’s waterways navigable and safe for the maritime industry and recreational boaters. Key project areas include:
-
Salem River & Maurice River (Deepening and maintenance)
-
Cold Spring Inlet
-
New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway
The North Wildwood Solution
In a long-awaited move, the funding also supports the redesign of the Wildwoods project. This allows for the use of sand from the Hereford Inlet to replenish North Wildwood, providing a sustainable solution for one of the state’s most erosion-prone areas.
Future Outlook: FY2027 and the Coastal Trust Fund
While the $99 million is a historic win, more help is on the horizon. Congressman Van Drew has requested an additional $70 million for the Fiscal Year 2027 appropriations process, specifically targeting:
-
Long Beach Island (LBI)
-
Absecon Island (Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate, and Longport)
-
North Brigantine Seawall Extension
To move away from “emergency” funding cycles, the Congressman is also pushing the Coastal Trust Fund Act, which aims to create a permanent, reliable stream of federal revenue for beach maintenance.
