IDEMIA Pushes Back: Division of Elections Responsible for Verification
Contrary to initial reports attributing the fault solely to a DMV software defect, identity services provider IDEMIA issued a response placing ultimate responsibility on state election authorities.
In a public statement, IDEMIA clarified its role in the process:
“IDEMIA’s role is to transmit information through the motor vehicle system. The voter registration information is transmitted to the New Jersey Department of State, Division of Elections, which is ultimately responsible for verifying eligibility to vote. Information submitted by IDEMIA must still be validated and adjudicated by the Division of Elections.”
Critique surrounding the event asserts that the Division of Elections failed to properly validate voter eligibility during initial intake, allowing non-citizen records to pass through the system without sufficient verification.
