Lightning Strike Ignites Basement Fire in Ridgewood During Severe Storm

Ridgewood NJ, A severe thunderstorm turned dangerous on Monday night in Ridgewood, New Jersey, when a direct lightning strike set a commercial building on fire, triggering a second-alarm response from local emergency crews.

What Happened on Goffle Road?

Shortly after 7:00 PM on Monday night, as severe weather rolled across Bergen County, the Ridgewood Fire Department received reports of smoke coming from a business at 225 Goffle Road.

According to Ridgewood Fire Chief John Judge, responding crews arrived on scene and confirmed that a fire had broken out in the basement. The fire quickly began spreading upward inside the walls and piping areas of the structure.

Mutual Aid Crews Assist in Emergency Extinguishment

Due to the complexity of the fire traveling within the structure’s walls, a second alarm was called, drawing support from neighboring volunteer departments:

• Waldwick Volunteer Fire Department (64 Truck) was dispatched on the second alarm. The crew assisted inside with fire extinguishment and overhaul operations to prevent hidden flames from rekindling.

• Ridgewood Firefighters rapidly located the source of the blaze and cut off its path through the wall cavities and utility channels.

Firefighters successfully knocked down the fire and fully cleared the scene by 9:30 PM.

Safety Update & Cause Confirmed

A official investigation conducted by Fire Chief John Judge confirmed that the blaze was caused by a direct lightning strike.

Fortunately, despite the rapid spread inside the walls, no civilians or firefighters were injured during the incident.
