Ridgewood NJ, New Jersey Transit and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) have reached a new labor contract, preventing a potential rail strike that could have disrupted service for thousands of commuters.
New Contract Secures Wage Increases & Resolves Grievances
NJ Transit President and CEO Kris Kolluri and BLET General Chairman Thomas Haas announced the agreement in a joint statement on Monday. While full details remain unclear, the contract includes:
✔ A “reasonable” wage increase for union members
✔ Resolution of a long-standing grievance between the parties
“We believe this agreement not only reflects NJ TRANSIT’s commitment to fairness, efficiency, innovation, and long-term financial sustainability — but it ensures uninterrupted rail service for the 100,000 people who depend on it,” the statement read.
Averting a Major Commuter Crisis
The contract dispute dates back to 2019, when the engineers’ previous agreement expired. The situation escalated last summer, prompting President Joe Biden to create a presidential board to help mediate the conflict. Without a resolution, NJ Transit previously warned that a strike could have occurred as early as March 2025.
