SOUTH ORANGE — Police plan to boost patrols after officers from several departments were needed to disperse at least 300 young people who gathered in downtown South Orange late Saturday, sparking fights and blocking traffic.

South Orange Police Chief Kyle Kroll said Tuesday the crowd contained a mix of village teens and others from nearby communities, including Newark, East Orange and Irvington residents, who apparently arrived by public transportation.

The unruly crowd formed around 8 p.m. and kept officers busy until around midnight, according to police. Kroll said he requested assistance from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, Maplewood and Orange police as altercations broke out among the throngs of teens and young adults.

“We just didn’t have enough officers to handle a crowd that large,” the chief said. “The agreement we have with surrounding [police departments] worked out well.

Some of the music fans at the Hot 97 Summer Jam clashed with law enforcement officers at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night, and State Police in riot gear called in two Bearcat armored personnel carriers and shot streams of pepper spray gas as angry concertgoers hurled bottles, according to reports from the scene.

State Police spokesman Sgt. Gregory Williams said he could confirm only that “additional troopers” had been dispatched to the stadium in East Rutherford, but he could not say how many. He said there were “multiple arrests” inside and outside the stadium, but that he could not give precise numbers.

The concert, with headliners Kendrick Lamar and Chris Brown, continued despite the unrest.

People at the scene said police used sound generators to produce a screeching, ear-pounding noise in an effort to disperse the crowd, only to see it regroup and attack with bottles at another site in the parking lot.

Hundreds of troopers and police officers called in from nearby communities pushed back against crowds of people angry that they could not get into the stadium, using clubs and riot shields, according to reports from the scene.

Two men have been arrested and charged with burglarizing a dozen motor vehicles last in Ringwood and Wyckoff, taking holiday gifts, cameras, laptops and checkbooks, police said in a news release.

One suspect, Nathan Pendrak, 33, of Wayne, also is charged with stealing $1,700 worth of items from three unlocked cars in Wyckoff by borough police.

Pendrak, who also goes by the name Nathan Jodice, and Joseph Caffiero of Edison, 29, were each charged with 12 counts of burglary and theft, as well as fraudulent use of credit cards and criminal mischief in both towns. Pendrak was also charged with possession of crack cocaine, heroin and drug paraphernalia.

A search of their vehicles and homes “revealed evidence of the Ringwood burglaries as well as burglaries throughout North Jersey and into New York State,” the release says.

They are in Passaic County Jail. Bail has been set at $25,000.
