Ridgewood NJ, nearly 100 students and administrators from Incheon High School in South Korea visited RHS and BFMS today for presentations and performances. Bravo to RHS STEM students and student ambassadors, and our BFMS Jazz Machine for a wonderful welcome!
Ridgewood NJ,the BFMS math team for taking first place in the MATHCOUNTS 2020 Bergen/Hudson Chapter Competition! In March, these students will be showcasing their problem-solving skills in the state competition at Rutgers University.
Ridgewood NJ, Benjamin Franklin Middle School (BFMS) students have been busy helping their community! The BFMS annual SOUPer Bowl resulted in a collection of 1,674 cans of soup to be donated. The Student Council also worked with the Social Service Club to collect donations for Tackle Kids Cancer, which supports pediatric cancer research. The students raised $950, and all donations are matched by Eli Manning. Well done!
Ridgewood NJ, BFMS Choral ,Orchestra and Band have big news. Justine Kawash, BFMS Choral Director Grades 6-8 reports on the Region I auditions: Alexis Rosenfeld (Gr. 7, Alto) and Katarina Burton (Gr. 7, Alto) were selected as members of the Region I 2019 Chorus.
Carol Sharar, BFMS Orchestra Director, reports that five string players have won placement into the prestigious Region I Intermediate Orchestra for 2019. They are: Harin Jeong (Gr. 8, violin), Phillip Bang (Gr. 8, viola, 1st chair), Ania Skulskaia (Gr. 7, violin), Jenny Yang (Gr. 7, violin) and Jenny Jang (Gr. 7, violin), who in addition also won Silver in the Scholastic Writing Contest.
Jason Curcio, BFMS Director of Bands and the Jazz Machine, has announced the Region Band selectees for 2019: Annie Skulskaia (Gr. 7, flute), Seung He Rhew (Gr. 8, clarinet,) Jennifer Lee (Gr. 7, clarinet), Eojin Kikm (Gr. 8, clarinet) and Joelle Yoon (Gr. 7, trombone).
Ridgewood NJ, The stars are out this week! Ridgewood’s very own J. Mark McVey, Ciarán Sheenan and Eugene Thomas will be performing with over 140 cast members in this year’s Jamboree 2019 “Long Way Home.” J. Marc McVey made his Broadway debut as Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables.” Ciaran Sheenan, Irish born and acclaimed actor and singer has performed in Phantom of the Opera as The Phantom and as Raoul and currently performs with The Four Phantoms. Eugene Thomas was the lead singer of the musical groups “Megatones” and “Epitome of Sound” in the 1960’s and recently released a 45 LP which is widely celebrated here and internationally. RHS Jamboree’s “Long Way Home” welcomes these amazing performers to their cast! Jamboree has given out over $1 million dollars in college scholarships to graduating seniors since its inception over 70 years ago! Come on out and support this great cause!

Ridgewood NJ, Michael Feeney Jr. Police Academy class #4 members graduated Friday at BFMS. Congratulations to the 100 student participants and thank you to the Ridgewood Police Department, Bergen County Sheriff’s Department K-9 and Bomb Squad, Ridgewood Emergency Services, Ridgewood Fire Department, Bergen County Law and Public Safety and more.
Special thanks to Lieutenant Glenn Ender, Jill Feeney & junior instructors and to everyone involved with this outstanding program! Village of Ridgewood Mayor Susan Knudsen and Chief Jacqueline Luthcke got involved and did a few selfies with graduates.
Ridgewood NJ, FAQ on Full-Day Kindergarten: Vote is November 8. The November 8 election ballot will include a question for residents about implementing full-day Kindergarten FDK) in Ridgewood. Public presentations will be held on FDK at 7 p.m.. at BFMS on Wednesday, October 5 and at GWMS on Thursday, October 27.

The Ridgewood BOE had previously issued this statement on the contract talks with the REA , “The Board and the REA will continue to negotiate with each other in good faith in a respectful manner.” . We guess the teachers didn’t get the memo.
BFMS Holds Public Observance of Memorial Day Today May 22
On Thursday, May 22, Benjamin Franklin Middle School will host the second “Evening of Remembrance” in honor of Memorial Day. Students, parents, teachers, veterans — all are welcome to participate. The event will take place in the BFMS Auditorium starting at 7:30 p.m.
This year marks the 70th Anniversary of D-Day and the BFMS community will be looking closely at honoring the memory of “The Bedford Boys,” a small Virginia town that lost 19 young men that day. The evening will feature student poems, reflections and a video telling the story of the Bedford Boys. BFMS students will also be decorating luminaries for display that evening. They will also be selling luminaries in honor of veterans and the fallen.
To purchase a luminary in memory of a relative or friend, please send $10 payable to BFMS c/o Mollie Van Horne at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, 335 N. Van Dien Street, Ridgewood, NJ 07450, no later than May 16. The proceeds of the sale of the luminaries will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.
