Reader says , “Let’s face it, empty nesters won’t be moving to Ridgewood, but they’ll be moving out”

for sale Ridgewood_Real_Estate_theRodgewopodblog

” Let’s face it, empty nesters won’t be moving to Ridgewood, but they’ll be moving out. The village would need to accommodate more kids either way. It’s therefore reasonable that property taxes would keep creeping up. The best residents can do is closely monitor and influence village spending… and welcome newcomers by sharing best practices that made this place a desirable upper middle class destination in the first place. A passive aggressive approach doesn’t help anyone. And btw, many of NYC newcomers are conservatives, escaping liberal paradise of urban sprawl! You’ll be surprised – you may make some good friends with newcomers! “

Reader says the State legislature has been pursuing an Over Development agenda for decades

Sealfons-rendering

” Not only have our small town local leaders failed on the development front. The State has us screwed because they can override local towns if developers sue and get state judges to force development on us. You will also see that the State has a complex web of incentives where it tries to get certain kinds of development. Aside from the obvious, such as tax breaks to build or set up business in a blighted area like Paterson, they have a mind numbing number of other programs and incentives. Stupid things such as trying to incentivize building within walking distances to transit hubs because it is perceived of as good for the environment are part of why we see buildings going up next to train tracks (see the huge apartment building in Waldwick?) So it does matter that our State legislature has been pursuing an agenda for decades.

Reader says , “So, you raised your children here, got the benefit of an excellent education, a town without metal detectors or gang violence”

clock_cbd_theridgewoodblog

” So, you raised your children here, got the benefit of an excellent education, a town without metal detectors or gang violence. I assume they got into good colleges. You are living in a house worth probably assessed over $1.6 million. Your taxes are about 60% of what you would pay in most of Essex County. If you work in New York City, there are few towns that provide a better lifestyle with a shorter commute than Ridgewood. We have a great downtown (true, maybe not as good as it used to be, but neither is anywhere else, and I agree that the high parking fees are ridiculous). As for the leaders, they have been elected for issue-specific reasons, but that is the responsibility of the voters (and especially the NON-voters). Ridgewood isn’t perfect by any means, but it isn’t nearly as bad as everyone is making it out to be. But if you disagree, lots of people are ready to buy your house, which would undoubtedly be priced higher than most surrounding towns, and marketed highlighting Ridgewood’s many amenities and qualities. I hope James’ potential purchasers don’t read his blog entry! “

Reader asks Will the Village Prorate Parking Fees for Tag Holders

57155044 2001767000118813 3346519632348446720 o

” Purchasers of premium parking hang tags allowing for parking in the train station lot should be refunded a portion of their purchase price. I paid for 12 months of parking. Not 8-9 months. This project was surely known about when the tags went on sale in December 2018. Nothing was said to purchasers about this 1/4 year project which materially diminishes the value of a station parking tag (whose purchase price which went from $1000 to $1300 in the space of a year). “

Reader says , “the train is still the best way to get to the city”

Ridgewood-Trainstation1_theridgewoodblog

“All of this is driven by the ever increasing need for more and more fees to feed the out of control spending“

Another factor is supply and demand. As more people apply for parking permits, price has to rise. It would be against basic rules of market economy to do otherwise. We may not like it, but what’s the alternative?

With all honesty, the train is still the best way to get to the city. For the most part it’s punctual, there are always seats and it’s comfy. Where else can you get a better option? Summit/Millburn have an easier way to get to Penn St direct, but many Ridgewood commuters go to Hoboken stop instead.

Ridgewood is a beautiful, welcoming village. And hey, if the parking is too pricey, why not ride a bicycle during warner season (free) and Uber/Lyft when it’s cooler (~$7 one way)?
