Ridgewood NJ Gov. Phil Murphy recently signed into law a consumer-friendly bill that was pushed by the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey and a statewide movers’ group to eliminate companies that try to scam the public.

The new law cracks down on unlicensed movers, who operate without insurance, often cheating and scamming consumers. The director of the state Division of Consumer Affairs can now work with local police to impound vehicles used by illegitimate movers. Police can also bring disorderly persons charges against rogue movers. If convicted, the penalty could be up to up to six months in jail and a maximum fine of $1,000.

“It is quite amazing that Gov. Murphy and the politicians in Trenton have no interest in finding ways to reduce spending as opposed to raising taxes and increasing spending. Several years ago David Tepper moved himself and his business’s to Florida which put a major dent in New Jersey’s tax collections. Will they ever learn?”

Trenton NJ, Govenour Murphy has caved saying he will sign the states $38.7 billion budget by the midnight Sunday deadline, in order to avoid a shut down. The Democratic governor said his exact actions on the budget “are still to be determined.”The governor added the dramatic flair saying , “I can”t play politics with innocent lives in the state,” Murphy said. “I’ve taken shutting this government down off the table.” Murphy added he wanted to reassure New Jersey residents and visitors that politics wouldn’t spoil their planned Fourth of July revelry or shutter important state services.A shutdown would have likely closed state parks and beaches, shuttered government services like courts and the DMV, and left thousands of government workers furloughed.

Murphy’s Tax Rhetoric Helping Other States to Lure Residents, Jobs from NJ

New Jerseyans Understand “Tax Fairness” Means “Tax Increase”

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Trenton NJ, Senator Declan O’Scanlon said that Governor Phil Murphy’s continued demand for higher taxes under the guise of “tax fairness” is only helping the efforts of low- and no-tax states like Florida that are actively working to lure residents, employers, and jobs from high-tax New Jersey.

“Florida is already running compelling advertising campaigns that are targeting both families and employers in our area who are fed up with paying some of the highest tax bills in the nation,” said O’Scanlon (R-Monmouth). “The data shows that people are paying attention to those sales pitches, and they’re packing up and leaving New Jersey for more affordable places that promise a significant tax savings.”

Want lower taxes? Murphy should focus on pensions, aid to some schools

By Jack Ciattarelli

On his inauguration day, Phil Murphy received two gifts any new governor of New Jersey could only wish for – the lowest unemployment rate in 17 years and hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenue based on U.S. Supreme Court decisions on internet sales and sports betting. It wasn’t enough. In his first budget, Murphy raised other new and existing taxes more than $1.5 billion, including New Jersey corporate and personal taxes, despite both already being among the highest in the nation. Murphy’s political justification was, “We need to make New Jersey stronger and fairer.” His policy justification was, “The Trump tax reforms lowered corporate taxes” and “People need to pay their fair share.” While businesses and people may never leave a country over taxes, they will leave a state. Moreover, if you try to offset federal tax decreases with state tax increases, you only make your state an outlier. That’s exactly what’s happening to New Jersey. The proof . . . For the fifth year in a row, New Jersey’s business climate has been ranked dead last in the country. And the annual United Van Lines study shows New Jersey is, once again, one of the leading out-migration states in the country, with nearly 50 percent listing “jobs” as their reason for leaving.

As the wealthy leave New Jersey for states with much lower tax burdens, it will be our middle class and the working poor who will make up the difference in higher property tax bills. New Jerseyans already pay the highest property taxes in the country, not to mention we pay among the highest income and corporate taxes as well. Even millennials can’t afford to live here anymore.

Trenton NJ, In light of recent reports highlighting New Jersey’s continued economic decline, Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-26) today urged Governor Phil Murphy to stop pushing to legalize pot and start pushing for job creation.

Pennacchio’s call for action follows news that New Jersey lost 7,700 jobs in February, according to new data by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. New Jersey also lost at least 2,300 jobs in December of 2018 alone.

Additionally, this week the NJBIA released their 2019 Climate Analysis, which indicated that New Jersey continues to have the worst business climate, highest property taxes, highest sales tax, and highest income tax in the region.

Ridgewood NJ, According to Garden State Initiative (GSI)  analysis of the newest jobs numbers released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) today, New Jersey’s job growth for 2018 was much smaller than first reported.  Instead of the previously reported 61,900 new jobs added in 2018, there were actually only 39,400 new jobs added last year – a decline of 44%. (The Bureau of Labor Statistics revises jobs statistics on a monthly and annual basis to account for new data available and more in-depth analysis that is able to take place.)

The revised numbers from BLS mean that while New Jersey did still experience jobs growth for 2018, the actual growth was lower by 27,500 jobs than initially reported.  New Jersey’s labor force is still smaller than the average labor force size in 2006.

Some Key Findings of the GSI report :

  • New jobs in 2018 revised downward 44% – from 61,900 to 39,400
  • Labor force remains smaller than average labor force in 2006
  • Participation rate continues to trail national average
  • Unemployment ticked up .1 to 4.0%

GOP Chairman Steinhardt, ” When politicians say they will raise taxes on the wealthy, they always end up raising taxes on the middle and working classes “

Trenton NJ, GOP Chairman Steinhardt’s Statement on the Murphy Budget Address : Winston Churchill said it best. “An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.”  When politicians say they will raise taxes on the wealthy, they always end up raising taxes on the middle and working classes, too.

Just last year, Phil Murphy and the Democrats set the bar for their Success Tax at $5M in income. Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? But, one year later, these same Democrats redefine success as any family making more than $1M a year. Still sounds like a lot, I know. But, that’s an 80% drop from last year, and if the Democrats keep feeding and growing State government, you’re next.

Trenton NJ,  NJGOP Chairman Doug Steinhardt released the following statement on President Trump’s State of the Union Address: “President Trump is taking our country in the right direction. His policies are earning new, well-paying jobs, helping small businesses thrive and lifting America’s economy to new heights. “While America grows, our home state of New Jersey lags behind. It’s time for New Jersey to fight back and tell Democrats in Trenton that we have had enough of the burdensome tax increases and strangling regulations. It’s time for both parties to come together and take action on improving New Jersey’s business climate and making our state more affordable.”

Reader says , “The ONLY way to keep property taxes from rising exponentially is to encourage long time residents with no children in the schools to stay put”

“The ONLY way to keep property taxes from rising exponentially is to encourage long time residents with no children in the schools to stay put. We do not ask for anything other than basic services such as police, fire, and plowing the snow and picking up leaves. Many of us spend time at our summer or winter homes, in order to meet the 181 day requirement to be a resident of a more tax friendly state so we don’t even vote here . Of the 14 homes on my block, only 6 have school age children. If you chase the other 8 homeowners out with higher taxes, chances are about 100% that the purchasers of these homes will have children, so add 12-15 students to the roster. Due to cheap interest rates the homes are more affordable to more buyers who struggle with a big mortgage for 10 years while their kids are in school, then bail out as soon as they graduate . I grew up here and historically empty nesters would stay since it is a nice place to live. The trend of turnover has been accelerated by these people who are “marginal” by financial qualifications who need to bail out and go back to cheaper living such as a small condo in mahwah or renting in NYC.
The old timers ask for very little. Do us a favor and keep the charm of the village. Keep your dumb lawn signs off the property , rake your leaves so they don’t blow in my yard ,fix the peeling paint on your house, and keep your rubbish barrels in the back yard.
Or chase us out and your kids will be on split sessions unless you want a huge tax increase to expand the school”

New Jersey ranks dead last for business friendliness before we even get to a $15 minimum wage

A 467A1

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Trenton NJ, In an Op-Ed that appeared in ROI-NJ on Friday, NJBIA President and CEO Michele Siekerka called the agreement announced last week by Gov. Phil Murphy and legislative leadership to raise the minimum wage to $15 as “far from economically responsible.”
Siekerka first notes the cumulative expenses already absorbed by small businesses in New Jersey – including “costly mandates, expensive compliance regulations, more subsidies for energy delivery and increased taxes as a means to balance the state budget. For this, New Jersey ranks dead last for business friendliness before we even get to a $15 minimum wage.”
