Donald Trump makes a Texas-size splash with visit to Mexican border

LAREDO, Tex. — A defiant Donald Trump, visiting the U.S. border with Mexico here Thursday, said again that he will not apologize for his hard-line rhetoric on illegal immigration or back away from his plan to build a wall between the two nations.

During a whirlwind visit — it was less than three hours from when his jet touched down to when it took off — Trump blazed around in a presidential-style motorcade that included seven SUVs and even more police cars. Local officers blocked off roads, including Interstate 35, for Trump’s entourage.

The Republican presidential candidate, leading the GOP field in national polls but increasingly under fire from the establishment wing of his party, said repeatedly that he had been told he would be in “great danger” if he visited this town of 236,000 in southern Texas — even though Laredo, which is roughly 96 percent Hispanic, has a significantly lower murder rate than Trump’s home town of New York City. He would not say who had told him that he was at risk.

Garrett Stands with New Jersey Residents Against President Obama’s Unconstitutional Amnesty
Mar 3, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05), issued the following statement today after voting to end President Obama’s unconstitutional executive amnesty:

“Over seven weeks ago, the House stood with the American people by voting to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security, and to put an immediate stop to President Obama’s unconstitutional executive amnesty.  It was my hope that Senate Democrats would stop performing political gymnastics and answer repeated calls from the House to come to Conference with this bill so we could work on a deal in the best interest of our constituents.

“I supported short-term funding extensions to continue these negotiations with the Senate in good faith, but I cannot ignore the will of my constituents by supporting a bill that allows President Obama’s executive amnesty plan to continue unchecked.  I stand with the people of New Jersey’s Fifth District, law-abiding immigrants, and the Constitution of the United States, and I will continue to fight to undo the damage caused by President Obama’s actions.”

Judge blocks Obama order on immigration
February 17, 2015, 06:15 am
By Ben Kamisar and Kyle Balluck

A federal judge late Monday temporarily blocked President Obama’s executive action designed to shield millions of immigrants from deportation.

U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen wrote that 26 states that filed a lawsuit against the action would “suffer irreparable harm” without a preliminary injunction and that the constitutional question must be decided before the administration can move forward with its plans.

“Once these services are provided, there will be no effective way of putting the toothpaste back in the tube should Plaintiffs ultimately prevail on the merits,” Hanen wrote

The president’s executive actions on immigration, announced last November, would delay deportations for millions of undocumented immigrants and provide them with the opportunity to apply for work permits. The first part of those policies, the deportation delay, had been set to go into effect Wednesday. The rest are expected to begin later this year.

President Obama to announce executive action on immigration Thursday

President Obama to announce executive action on immigration Thursday

By Juliet Eilperin and Ed O’Keefe

President Obama will announce Thursday that he will use his executive authority to expand temporary protections to millions of undocumented immigrants, according to several individuals who have been briefed on the decision. Obama will travel to Las Vegas on the heels of that announcement to rally support for his initiative on Friday.

Congress will receive official details on the move Thursday, according to a senior Democratic Party official.

Even before final confirmation of the president’s plans, outside advocates began readying events to promote the administration’s immigration policy.

“We hear there will be a prime time Thursday evening announcement (to preview) and full unveiling in Vegas on Friday,” immigration advocate Dawn Le wrote in an email to other activists, which was later inadvertently sent to a group of reporters Wednesday morning. “Can folks begin to work and plan watch parties for Thursday and/or Friday? Unclear whether Thursday night content will be what is “celebratory”, but Friday will be where we need a lot of energy guaranteed.”

Dems press Obama to wait on immigration

Dems press Obama to wait on immigration

President Obama has a tough decision to make on the timing of an executive order to freeze deportations of illegal immigrants.

Senate Democrats want him to wait to give them time to pass an omnibus spending bill and other legislative priorities in the lame-duck session that is just now ramping up.

But delaying the action, even for a few weeks, could make Obama look weak and inflame immigration advocates who are already furious with him for holding back until after the midterm elections.

“You have growing anxiety amongst the immigrant community that’s losing faith that the president is going to do as he said he would do,” said Brent Wilkes, national executive director of the League of United Latin American Citizens. “I really think he’ll lose support from the Latino community if he continues to wait.”

Complicating the situation further, Obama is being asked to do a favor for Democratic lawmakers at a time when they are casting blame on him for the party’s disastrous showing at the ballot box.

East Coast Popular for Immigrants in US Illegally

East Coast Popular for Immigrants in US Illegally

WASHINGTON — Nov 18, 2014, 1:51 PM ET
By HOPE YEN Associated Press

Immigrants entering the U.S. illegally are increasingly making states along the East Coast their home rather than states closer to the Mexican border.

New Jersey, Florida and Pennsylvania were among seven states to register gains in unauthorized immigrants from 2009 to 2012, even as the total number of immigrants here in the U.S. unlawfully was unchanged at 11.2 million, according to a report released Tuesday by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center.

New Jersey had the biggest gain, jumping 75,000 to 525,000 as many immigrants from India and Ecuador crossed illegally into the state.

It was followed by Florida, increasing 50,000 to 925,000. Pennsylvania was third, rising 30,000 to 170,000. It saw increases from several regions including Honduras, India and the Dominican Republic, many of whom moved into the rapidly diversifying southeastern part of the state.

Other states with increases were Maryland, Virginia, Idaho and Nebraska.

In the early to mid-2000s, migrants primarily from Mexico drove much of the nation’s illegal immigration into Western states. Now, 14 states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon are seeing declines.

Mexicans still make up the bulk of immigrants here illegally — roughly 52 percent, down from 56 percent in 2009 — but increasingly other countries, particularly from Central America, Asia and the Caribbean, are contributing to the mix.

The report comes as President Barack Obama seeks to move forward with executive actions that potentially could shield from deportation about 5 million immigrants here illegally. Congressional Republicans are in an uproar over the plans and are debating how to thwart the president.

When the DREAM Becomes a Nightmare

When the DREAM Becomes a Nightmare
Jul. 21
By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

Governor Chris Christie is as effective a speaker on the issues of taxes, entitlement reform and school choice as you’ll ever find, Save Jerseyans. Plain spoken but substantively on-point; the clarity with which he speaks makes apolitical Americans want to get up and follow him and good faith dissenters concede the logic of his argument.

The so-called “YouTube moments” concerning ^^ are what we remember and, at least until Sandy and Bridgegate, they’re what defined his brand. Just as often, however, Chris Christie talks like what he is by training: a lawyer. And I don’t mean that in a disparaging way (I am one!). All the same, it can get him into trouble.

Immigration comes to mind as a prominent example.

It all started back in 2008, before he was even governor, when U.S. Attorney Christie inartfully tried to explain the difference between criminal illegal entry into the United States and civil penalties associated with overstaying a visa’s lifespan. I went easy on him at the time, but it was a lot more difficult to rationalize his support for a New Jersey version of the DREAM Act signed into law at the end of 2013.

Impossible, in fact.

Conservatives including yours truly warned that “compassionate” legislation would lead to a “magnet state” effect, inducing more illegal immigration without reforming the system to ensure equity for all of the affected parties. In short, a result with anything but a compassionate outcome! Opponents predictably scoffed at the criticism by trotting out the same old lame and unsubstantiated allegations of xenophobia.

Today, I get to say “I told you so” and it gives me absolutely no pleasure…

Border security: Key questions answered

Border security: Key questions answered

By Peter Sullivan – 06/29/14 02:30 PM EDT

A surge of children crossing the southern border and entering the United States illegally has become a political crisis. House Republicans hammered the White House on the issue in recent days while the administration countered by highlighting how it has responded.

But what’s really going on?

1. How big is the surge?

52,193 unaccompanied children, defined as those under the age of 18, were apprehended crossing the southern border of the United States from Oct. 1, 2013 to June 15, 2014. That’s about double the 26,206 who were caught in the same timeframe the previous year.

In addition, 39,000 adults with children have been apprehended during that time period, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)

2. Where are the children coming from?

About three-quarters of the children come from just three countries: Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

The increase in unaccompanied children from those nations began in the 2012 fiscal year and has accelerated since then, according to DHS data. There are about ten times as many children from those countries crossing the border as there were in fiscal year 2011. Meanwhile, the numbers from other Central American countries have remained steady. The number of children arriving illegally from Mexico actually declined in the most recent fiscal year.

3. What are the root causes?

There are several, but strife in those three countries, together with untrue rumors of “permisos” allowing children to stay in the United States, play a key part.

Are we all racist now?

gillian-duffy_2924769b

Four years ago in Rochdale, when Gillian Duffy challenged Gordon Brown on immigration, the affronted prime minister shied away and muttered darkly about that ‘bigoted woman’. It is quite clear now who was the big

Are we all racist now?

As a survey of British social attitudes reveals a shocking upturn in prejudice, Allison Pearson argues that the political elite’s desire to advance multiculturalism with mass immigration has backfired…..

That was two months ago, and I wish I were more surprised to learn that a new British Social Attitudes survey has found that more than a third of Britons admit they are racially prejudiced. Prejudice fell to an all-time low in 2001, but the latest figures show that the problem has returned to the level of 30 years ago. More than 90 per cent of those who say they are racist want to see immigration halted. More interestingly, 72 per cent of those who do not consider themselves racist also want to see immigration cut drastically.

As shell-shocked politicians from the main parties struggle to discern the causes of Ukip’s deafening electoral success, here’s a tip: look in the mirror, chaps! It is politicians, not the British people, who are to blame for a resurgence in racism; politicians who have ignored public opinion and created the conditions in which resentments fester and grow. Specifically, though not exclusively, it is New Labour who welcomed workers from the new, accession countries of the EU at a time when countries such as France and Germany wisely exercised their right to keep them out for another seven years. According to Jack Straw, this was a “spectacular” error. And Jack should know, because he was Home Secretary at the time. The plan of Tony Blair’s government, as laid bare by Andrew Neather, then a Blair speechwriter, was to banish that old, hideously white, retrograde England and usher in a new, vibrant, multicultural country which, rather conveniently, would vote Labour. Mr Blair now works in international conflict resolution, having stored up enough conflict in his homeland to keep future generations busy for centuries.
