ISIS claims responsibility for mass shooting

Omar Mateen, Terrorist Who Attacked Orlando Gay Club

Gunman in Pulse nightclub shooting identified as Omar Mateen; 50 dead

ORLANDO, Fla. – Sen. Bill Nelson says that ISIS has taken credit for the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando and police say that the gunman called 911 declaring allegiance to the Islamic State.

Police said the gunman, identified as 29-year-old Omar Mir Seddique Mateen, opened fire early Sunday morning at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, killing 50 people and injuring at least 53 more in what is the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

Mateen called 911 around the time of the attack to pledge his allegiance to ISIS and he mentioned the Boston bombers, according to the FBI.

News 6 was on scene Sunday afternoon as local and federal bomb squad personnel were entering Mateen’s Fort Pierce apartment. It’s not clear what they found. Mateen, an American citizen born in New York, has been on law enforcement radar since 2013.

Officials said Mateen made the 911 call more than 20 minutes into the attack and had legally purchased two of the firearms, a handgun and a long gun, used in the shooting within the last week in Florida.

Mateen had been previously investigated by the FBI as possibly having ties to Islamic extremism. The investigations didn’t find evidence to charge Mateen with anything, officials said.

If ISIS Came to Your Town Would You Convert to Islam?

Iraq ISIS Abu Wahe 2941936b

You might expect a group of teenagers to say they’d stand up to the Islamic State and refuse to convert. But what would you do if push came to shove?
BY DAVID HARRIS

Thu, April 21, 2016

So here’s the scenario.

A teacher in Italy taught her class of 13-year olds all about the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL). At the end of the project she asked her 25 students what they would do if the Islamic State took over their town. All but two reportedly said they would convert to Islam.

It’s somewhat tragic that a mix of classroom education and possibly some media exposure to ISIS barbarism would suck the bravado out of all the kids, other than two die-hard Catholics. But that’s the effect of the threats and actions of ISIS.

In every generation, there are the brave few who stand up to fight against one evil scourge or another, despite the likely great personal sacrifice.

In the Massacre of Verden in 782, Charlemagne is said to have killed 4,500 captive Saxons who rebelled against forced conversion to Roman Catholicism.

Legend has it that the Souliot women in the village of Zalongo in 1803 in Epirus danced and sang as they killed their own babies before committing suicide rather than facing capture by Ottoman-Albanian ruler Ali Pasha and all that would have followed.

U.S. Folk Musician to Win Islamic State Hearts and Minds—with Songs of Peace

Oregon folk singer James Twyman

by DANIEL NUSSBAUM15 Jan 20161,907

A Middle East on fire, as the Islamic State burns and slashes its way toward its goal of a global Caliphate.

A confident president, who believes that armed terrorist fighters “on the backs of pickup trucks” do not represent an existential threat to America.

A divided field of GOP presidential candidates, who debate the best method to confront the threat. Airstrikes. Economic damage. “Boots on the ground.”

The world waits for an answer.

One man has found it.

Oregon folk singer James Twyman plans to travel to Syria next week to confront the mass-murdering terrorist group — with songs of peace.

The Portland native and self-described “Peace Troubadour” will perform a concert at a venue in ISIS-controlled territory in Syria on January 31, according to Fox News. Armed with nothing more than a guitar and a prayer, Twyman believes that focusing on positivity can held put an end to the devastating bloodshed.

“It’s going to be pretty powerful,” the singer told Fox. “When people come together and focus on something in a positive way… there’s scientific evidence that it can change things for the better.”

Twyman reportedly plans to depart for Israel on January 20. From there, he’ll cross over the country’s northern border with Syria, and meet with contacts who are helping to plan the peace concert. Twyman says that Christian, Islamic and Jewish leaders — and more than 2,500 Tibetan monks — will join with him as he sings song infused with the traditional prayers of each of the three religions.

The singer is also simultaneously organizing a worldwide prayer vigil, to be conducted on the day he performs in Syria.

ISIS Influence on Web Prompts Second Thoughts on First Amendment

ISIS Influence on Web Prompts Second Thoughts on First Amendment

By ERIK ECKHOLMDEC. 27, 2015

It is one of the most hallowed precepts in modern constitutional law: Freedom of speech may not be curbed unless it poses a “clear and present danger” — an actual, imminent threat, not the mere advocacy of harmful acts or ideas. But in response to the Islamic State’s success in grooming jihadists over the Internet, some legal scholars are asking whether it is time to reconsider that constitutional line.

Appeals for a tougher response to the Islamic State’s online recruiting efforts have, not surprisingly, emerged from the political realm. Donald J. Trump said the government should call on Bill Gates and others to somehow close off dangerous Internet sites, and called First Amendment concerns foolish.

Hillary Clinton said the government should work with host companies to shut jihadist websites and chat rooms. That would be constitutional if voluntary, legal experts say, but not if the government exerted pressure on private firms to cooperate in censorship.

Some security experts called on YouTube to ban videos of lectures by Anwar al-Awlaki, which helped radicalize the attackers in San Bernardino, Calif., and many others.

Recently, though, a few legal scholars, too, have engaged in what others call First Amendment heresy. What does clear and present danger mean when terrorists are provoking violence over the Internet? Should not the government have a way, they ask, to block messages that facilitate terrorist acts?

Islam and the West: An Irreconcilable Conflict?

Patrick J

Monday – December 21, 2015 at 10:11 pm

By Patrick J. Buchanan

“I worry greatly that the rhetoric coming from the Republicans, particularly Donald Trump, is sending a message to Muslims here … and … around the world, that there is a ‘clash of civilizations.’”

So said Hillary Clinton in Saturday night’s New Hampshire debate.

Yet, that phrase was not popularized by Donald Trump, but by Harvard’s famed Samuel Huntington. His “The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order” has been described by Zbigniew Brzezinski as providing “quintessential insights necessary for a broad understanding of world affairs in our time.”

That Clinton is unaware of the thesis, or dismisses it, does not speak well of the depth of her understanding of our world.

Another attack on Trump, more veiled, came Monday in an “open letter” in The Washington Post where four dozen religious leaders, led by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, charge “some politicians, candidates and commentators” with failing to follow Thomas Jefferson’s dictum:

“I never will, by any word or act … admit a right of inquiry into the religious opinions of others.”

Intending no disrespect to Jefferson, if you do not inquire “into the religious opinions of others” in this world, it can get you killed.

“We love our Muslim siblings in humanity,” said the signers of Cardinal McCarrick’s letter, “they serve our communities as doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers, journalists, first responders, and as members of the U.S. Armed forces and Congress.”

Undeniably true. But, unfortunately, that is not the end of the matter.

Did the worst attack on the United States since Pearl Harbor, 9/11, have nothing to do with the Islamic faith?

Did Fort Hood and the San Bernardino massacres, the London subway bombings and the killings at Charlie Hebdo, as well as the slaughter at the Bataclan in Paris, have nothing to do with Islam?

Does the lengthening list of atrocities by terrorist cells of ISIS, Boko Haram, al-Qaida, al-Shabaab and the Nusra Front have nothing to do with Islam? Is it really illiberal to inquire “into the religious opinions” of those who perpetrate these atrocities? Or is it suicidal not to?

There has arisen a legitimate question as to whether Islamism can coexist peacefully with, or within, a post-Christian secular West.

Former Lt. Col Scott Mann shares his Views with the Ridgewood blog on Beating ISIS

Scott Mann Head Shot

December 16,2015

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood Nj, What’s the best tool to defeat ISIS? Tuesday night’s candidates in the Republican debate kept citing the same tired approach: “Bomb the hell out of them” “Boots on the ground” Former Lt. Col Scott Mann says, “These are the same tired responses that have put us in danger at home”. The best tool to defeat ISIS is to fight them deep in their own safe haven by leveraging tribes against them.

Scott Mann, is a former Lt. Col and Green Beret. He is the CEO of Mission America and author of the best-selling novel “Game Changers”. He spent 23 years in the Army Special Forces Career involved in Foreign Internal Defense, Counter-insurgency, and Stability Missions. He served in the Special Operations for over 18 years and has been a Green Beret for over 15 years in combat deployments in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, Iraq and Afghanistan. He is one of the only former Lt. Col’s that is actively still involved in the day-to-day transition of Green Berets from active duty into civilian life.He has been quoted frequently and seen on MSNBC with Alex Witt, Fox News, Fox News Radio, among other high profile media appearances. As a reminder, he is based in Tampa and can come in via Satellite or Skype.

Lt. Col Mann spoke immediately after the GOP debate, along his thoughts on whether shutting down the LA school district was the right move in response to ‘threats’ and what if any solution is there to win the war on ISIS.

His positioning is below:

Recent Gallup poll indicates that Americans are more worried about terrorism than any other issue and more than any time in the last ten years. The San Bernardino shooter and the LA school district closure heightens this concern.

As ISIS taunts the closure on Twitter, there are more attacks to come and they will be ugly.

Tuesday night’s 2016 political debate candidates needed to show some skill in understanding these terrorists threat.

An informed populous on new terror realities will be key to national security in 2016.

The school scare is a reminder of how serious the ISIS threat is here at home.

Every day we spend dabbling in political correctness and equivocating attacks as lone wolf and not that big of a deal gives our enemy to plot violence against our schools, communities and work sites.

We need informed citizens who are leaning forward to better understand how ISIS operates abroad and at home.

Only then can we demand the same of our politicians.

Hackers trace ISIS Twitter accounts back to internet addresses linked to Department of Work and Pensions

UPDATED 14:37, 15 DEC 2015
BY JASPER HAMILL

Teenage computer experts unveil astonishing web of unpublicised interactions linking extremist social media mouthpieces to the British
government

Hackers have claimed that a number of Islamic State supporters’ social media accounts are being run from internet addresses linked to the
Department of Work and Pensions.

A group of four young computer experts who call themselves VandaSec have unearthed evidence indicating that at least three ISIS-supporting
accounts can be traced back to the DWP’s London offices.

Every computer and mobile phone logs onto the internet using an IP address, which is a type of identification number.

Update: British government admits it can’t stop ISIS extremists using
internet addresses

The hacking collective showed Mirror Online details of the IP  addresses used by a trio of separate digital jihadis to access Twitter
accounts, which were then used to carry out online recruitment and propaganda campaigns.

At first glance, the IP addresses seem to be based in Saudi Arabia, but upon further inspection using specialist tools they appeared to
link back to the DWP.

EMAILED THREAT SHUTS DOWN SECOND-LARGEST US SCHOOL DISTRICT

US President Obama waves from a golf cart in Kailua

BY CHRISTOPHER WEBER
ASSOCIATED PRESS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The nation’s second-largest school district shut down all of its campuses Tuesday after an emailed threat targeted students at many Los Angeles-area schools.

The shooting in nearby San Bernardino that left 14 people dead this month influenced the decision to close all the schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, which 640,000 students attend, Superintendent Ramon Cortines said.

New York City officials say they received the same threat, but quickly concluded that it was a hoax. New York Police Commissioner William Bratton said he thought Los Angeles officials overreacted.

Bratton said the person who wrote the note claimed to be a jihadist, but made errors that made it clear the person was a prankster.

A law enforcement official says the threat was emailed to a school board member late Monday and appeared to come from overseas. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation.

U.S. Visa Process Missed San Bernardino Wife’s Zealotry on Social Media…ya think?

Tashfeen Malik

By MATT APUZZO, MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT and JULIA PRESTONDEC. 12, 2015

WASHINGTON — Tashfeen Malik, who with her husband carried out the massacre in San Bernardino, Calif., passed three background checks by American immigration officials as she moved to the United States from Pakistan. But none uncovered what Ms. Malik had made little effort to hide — that she talked openly on social media about her views on violent jihad.

She said she supported it. And she said she wanted to be a part of it.

American law enforcement officials said they recently discovered those old — and previously unreported — postings as they pieced together the lives of Ms. Malik and her husband, Syed Rizwan Farook, trying to understand how they pulled off the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil since Sept. 11, 2001.

Had the authorities found the posts years ago, they might have kept her out of the country. But immigration officials do not routinely review social media as part of their background checks, and there is a debate inside the Department of Homeland Security over whether it is even appropriate to do so.

U.S. report warns of ISIS’ ability to create fake passports

Iraq ISIS Abu Wahe 2941936b

By Rene Marsh, CNN

Updated 5:47 PM ET, Fri December 11, 2015

Washington (CNN)A new intelligence report shared with law enforcement warns of ISIS’ ability to create passports utilizing seized Syrian government assets, according to a law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the intelligence report’s contents.

The report warned that, based on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s intelligence sources, ISIS has access to passport printing machines and blank passport books, raising the possibility the documents could be faked, according to the source.

The source noted that, beyond the report, there’s concern that this capability coupled with ISIS access to government buildings in Syria that contain valid biographical data and fingerprint info on Syrian citizens give rise to the threat of identity theft.

State Department spokesman John Kirby said government officials are “mindful” that terrorists could be making false passports.

Rutherford Man Admits Conspiring To Back Islamic State Group

ISIS_theridgewoodblog

December 10,2015

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A 20-year-old New Jersey man has admitted conspiring to provide material support to the Islamic State group by planning to travel to Syria and join them.

Nader Saadeh of Rutherford pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court to conspiring with others to provide material support to the Islamic State group.

He remains detained without bail.

Saadeh is the last of three New Jersey defendants, including his brother, to admit guilt in the case, which came to light in August when he was arrested by the FBI.

He acknowledged a co-defendant showed him diagrams for making homemade bombs and discussed plans to use them in Times Square, the World Trade Center and Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology in Queens.

The feds received a tip from a roommate in the spring that Saadeh’s behavior had changed dramatically and he had become obsessed with ISIS.

Saadeh said that ISIS’ execution of a captured Jordanian Air Force pilot and the attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris earlier this year were justified, according to authorities.

In May, Saadeh flew to Jordan from John F. Kennedy International Airport, telling some of his friends that he was going to Iraq or Syria to join ISIS, authorities said. Investigators intercepted emails from his family begging him not to, according to a criminal complaint.

ISIS has targeted refugee program to enter US, chairman says

illegal immigrants3

By Julian Hattem – 12/07/15 01:33 PM EST

Intelligence officials have determined that Islamic extremists have explored using the refugee program to enter the United States, the head of the House Homeland Security Committee said on Monday.

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) declined to go into detail about the determination, which the Obama administration has not announced publicly.

Yet the disclosure could add ammunition to critics of the White House’s refugee plans who have warned that the program is vulnerable to infiltration by adherents of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

“ISIS members in Syria have attempted to exploit it to get into the United States,” McCaul said during a speech at the National Defense University on Monday.

“The U.S. government has information to indicate that individuals tied to terrorist groups in Syria have already attempted to gain access to our country through the U. S. refugee program.”

McCaul would not say specifically who informed him and other lawmakers about the revelation, only describing the sources as “elements of the intelligence community.”

“That was very courageous for them to come forward with this, to tell me about this personally, given the political debate on the Hill,” he added, suggesting that the news did not come from intelligence leaders.

The briefing happened “earlier this week,” McCaul said.
