THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
The 57th annual free summer Entertainment Under the Stars concert series kicked off on Thursday at the Kasschau Memorial Band Shell.
“Tunes in June,” featuring groups from Ridgewood High School, was the first show of the season.
“It’s been a tradition that it starts off with the RHS band,” said Jo Delaney, chairman of the Kasschau Memorial Shell Committee. “This has been going on for 50 years and they’ve been associated for forever.”
The Orpheus Club, The Ridgewood Choral and The Ridgewood Concert Band are also regular performers.
“These three groups have been part of the history since beginning,” Delaney said.
This year’s lineup is “an eclectic group of musical experiences by professional artists,” Delaney said. “We’re really across the board. There’s something for everybody.”
“We tried to have all sorts of groups so people have all kinds of music to enjoy and hear something new,” Delaney said. “Expose yourself to something you haven’t heard before and open yourself up to music.”

Verdi, known for his dramatic and melodic operas such as “Rigoletto,” “La Traviata” and “Il Trovatore,” composed the “Messa da Requiem” in 1874 in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and novelist whom he admired. His glorious “Requiem” uses vigorous rhythms, sublime melodies and dramatic contrasts to express the powerful emotions of the text.
Other highlights of the program include the world premiere of David Gotay’s “Earthen Vessels,” which is dedicated to Eric Dale Knapp, New Jersey Choral Society and Connecticut Choral Society, Gustav Mahler’s stunning “Choral Finale” from the “Resurrection Symphony No. 2,” and Richard Strauss’ “Beim Schlafengehen.”
Guest soloists for Verdi’s “Messa da Requiem” are soprano Megan Knapp, mezzo-soprano Teresa Buchholz, tenor Kirk Dougherty and bass Jared Schwartz.
Advance tickets are $35.00 for adults; $30.00 for students, seniors, and patrons with disabilities. (Add $5.00 at the door). Discounted group pricing is also available. Come one hour prior to performance time for The Inside Line, a complimentary lecture for all ticket holders that provides an intimate and entertaining preview of the music. For reservations or more information, visit www.NJCS.org or call the New Jersey Choral Society at (201) 379-7719.
Established in 1980, the New Jersey Choral Society is one of the state’s most prestigious choral groups, well-known for presenting outstanding and unique programs. Under the direction of Eric Dale Knapp, NJCS performs three major concerts annually in Bergen and Essex counties. They have performed at Carnegie Hall and the White House and have toured internationally in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, China, Australia, England, and last summer in France.

Ridgewood Composer in NJSO Spotlight
March 09, 2015 05:00 AM ET | Gregory Moomjy
Darryl Kubian is a rarity. The New Jersey native, who lives in Pompton Lakes, is both composer and working musician. His work as a composer will be highlighted in March, when the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra premieres O for a Muse of Fire, Kubian’s concert overture based on Shakespeare’s Henry V.
This is the second of Kubian’s compositions to be premiered by the NJSO. The concert will also feature Tchaikovsky’s swan song, Symphony No. 6, Pathétiqueand Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. O for a Muse of Fire is the last installment in this season’s New Jersey Roots Project, a program, now in its fifth season, that spotlights talented musical voices from New Jersey’s past and present.
Larger than life questions and ideas attract Kubian to composition. His first piece for the NJSO, 3-2-1, which the orchestra debuted in the 2007-2008 season, is a vision of the universe expanding and contracting as discussed in an article inScientific American. Both works tackle large questions, whether it is our place in the universe or the extent of a king’s power. The new work dramatizes the Battle of Agincourt, which cemented Henry V as the king of England and France. A king’s ability to send people to their death lies at the center of the work and according to Kubian, what relates the piece to the concert as a whole, “it’s a relationship about death [King] Henry has to make the decision to send people to die.”

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
Jazz feasts, film festivals, classical chamber concerts, rock shows, art galleries.
The positive dual-consensus among those at an Oct. 29 forum, which explored the “role of arts and historic preservation” in the Central Business District (CBD), was that the arts offer experiential opportunities important for attracting visitors and binding a community together, and that, luckily, Ridgewood already has most, if not all, of the components.
It just needs to get the word out.
“Ridgewood is certainly not a cultural wasteland,” said Deputy Mayor Albert Pucciarelli, who helped organize the forum. “I think if anything, what we need to do is [promote] it so we make it all known … It’s up to us to be good stewards of it.”
Residents on the new Ridgewood Arts Council are striving to do so, by working with the village’s network administrator, Dylan Hansen, to create a page on the village website – which is in the process of being revamped – that would be a “one-stop shop” for people looking for information on artistic goings-on in the village, noted Ridgewood Arts Council chair Linda Bradley.
The arts council, which became a village committee in 2014, is in the process of reinvigorating its general mission of promoting the arts in Ridgewood. The group has a broad definition of art that includes not just visual and performance arts, but fashion and the culinary arts, Pucciarelli said.

“It was a privilege being a part of two such partnerships, Jack and then Debbi, as well as having such a pool of talent and commitment with which to work within the church and most certainly within the community. It has been a gift.”
Her partnership with Jack Rodland, whom she met at Union Theological Seminary, began in 1964.
“He was smart, dedicated, compassionate,” she says.
They worked together at First Presbyterian Church in Rutherford, hired by Melvin Campbell, who claimed “we got two for price of one.” Joanne taught the children’s choir, Jack the adults, before coming to West Side in 1968, with daughters, Cathy, 3, and Carol (Caby), 6 months. West Side let Cathy into nursery school that September, while Joanne brought Carol to church with her. “Jack and I made the decision that this was our family.”
Jack went back to seminary at Union Theological and in 1980 was ordained at West Side becoming associate pastor. During that year, Joanne took on a lot of responsibility, lost both her mother and brother, and also attended Westchester Institution for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and became a therapist.

As Ridgewood-grown indie rock band Real Estate’s success grows, the founding members, all former Ridgewood High School (RHS) students, are dealing with growing up.
Following the March release of their third album “Atlas,” the band played on “The Late Show with David Letterman” in April. Their biggest headlining show ever is coming up on Oct. 2 at Terminal 5 in New York City.
Real Estate’s success has worked in tandem with other personal achievements.
Soon after the Letterman appearance, singer and guitarist Martin Courtney, a 2004 RHS graduate, and his wife, a fellow RHS graduate, welcomed their first child, a baby girl. Meanwhile bassist Alex Bleeker, a fellow ’04 grad, is busy touring with his second band, Alex Bleeker and The Freaks.
Guitarist Matt Mondanile, who attended RHS before transferring to a boarding school, is also still busy with his other band “Ducktails.”
