Westwood NJ, New Jersey State Troopers need to be ready for the unexpected and to always be prepared to act on or off-duty. Major Michael Rinaldi, Commanding Officer of the Office of Drug Monitoring and Analysis, showed how these moments can happen at any given time.
On Tuesday, January 1, Major Rinaldi was enjoying the holiday with his family at the Westwood Diner and Pancake House in Westwood, Bergen County, when something went wrong.
Shortly after finishing lunch with his wife and son, Major Rinaldi noticed commotion on the dining room floor and immediately realized there was a man who was conscious but exhibiting signs of an obstructed airway. Recognizing that the man was choking, he immediately began the Heimlich Maneuver.
While performing the Heimlich Maneuver, Westwood Police Officers Greg Dorfman and Stephanie Laurent along with EMS arrived on scene to assist in clearing the patron’s airway. Major Rinaldi’s quick and decisive actions undoubtedly prevented a New Year’s Day tragedy. Phenomenal job, Major Rinaldi!
Dover Township NJ, The New Jersey State Police are investigating a two-car crash that killed Kevin Quispe-Prieto, 21, of Beachwood, N.J., Jimmy Quispe-Prieto, 23, Victor Lugo, 24, and Robert Ordenana, 23, all of Lakewood, N.J., earlier this morning in Dover Township, Ocean County.
At 2:50 a.m., troopers responded to the report of a crash involving a sedan and a tanker truck southbound on the Garden State Parkway at milepost 81.5. Based on the preliminary investigation, Kevin Quispe-Prieto was driving an Infiniti G37 sedan in the right lane when he struck the rear of the truck. As a result of the collision, all four occupants sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the truck sustained minor non-life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
Trenton NJ, As of 9:30 p.m., the New Jersey State Police have responded to 555 motor vehicle crashes and 1,027 motorist aids in NJSP patrolled areas since midnight.
Yesterday the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM) activated the State Emergency Operations Center at 7:00 a.m. this morning in order to monitor the winter storm conditions expected to last through Friday. NJOEM has been in contact with all 21 counties and members of the Emergency Response Bureau are working with their counties to address any storm related needs. State Emergency Management Partners have been notified and will continue to coordinate with NJOEM on any traffic and power concerns.
Fair Lawn NJ , The New Jersey State Police have arrested Wellingon Moya, 44, of New York, N.Y., and Douglas Watson, 41, of Hawthorne, N.J., and seized $375,000 worth of heroin and cocaine.
Kingwood Township NJ, This has got to be the feel good story of the day . According to the NJ state police Facebook page ,we’re not sure what the odds are of this happening—maybe they’re close to the odds of a hole-in-one, winning the lottery, or being struck by lightning—but it happened.
On Friday, June 1, Trooper Michael Patterson stopped Matthew Bailly for a minor motor vehicle violation in Kingwood Township. During the initial conversation, Mr. Bailly told Trooper Patterson that he was a retired Piscataway police officer. Trooper Patterson, being a Piscataway native, told Mr. Bailly that he is from the same town. Now here’s where things get interesting…
Mr. Bailly asked Trooper Patterson where he used to live. When Trooper Patterson told him that he grew up on Poe Place, Mr. Bailly said that he remembered that street, because he helped deliver a baby there 27 years ago when he was a rookie cop. He was even able to describe the color, style of house, and the baby’s name, Michael.
Trooper Patterson extended his hand and replied, “My name is Michael Patterson, sir. Thank you for delivering me.”
Whatever the odds were, it happened. Trooper Michael Patterson stopped the police officer who delivered him 27 years ago in Piscataway. Mr. Bailly had four years on the job when he responded to a home on Poe Place in Piscataway. The date was October 5, 1991. Trooper Patterson’s mother, Karen Patterson, was out shopping when she went into labor. She barely made it home. Bobby Patterson, Trooper Patterson’s father, rushed outside, picked up his wife, and carried her inside the house. He then called the doctor who talked Officer Bailly through the birth.
Needless to say, Trooper Patterson, Matthew Bailly, and both of their families were ecstatic about the reunion. So, Trooper Patterson and his mother visited Mr. Bailly and his wife at their home where they took these photos! They all felt this story was so uplifting, it needed to be shared, and we agree! After all, as a police officer, you don’t always get a chance to have a moment like this with people you once helped in your career!
The New Jersey State Police and North Brunswick Police Department are cooperatively investigating the theft of an unmarked troop car, which was stolen from a trooper’s residence in North Brunswick and then used during the commission of two robberies and a theft at a gas station.
On Sunday, December 17, a New Jersey State Trooper reported his troop car stolen at approximately 9:39 a.m. when he discovered it missing from his driveway. The troop car contained several uniforms, two issued weapons, and other issued equipment.
Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives determined that the suspect and troop car were involved with three incidents early Sunday morning. At 6:50 a.m., a truck driver reported a robbery to State Police after he was stopped by the suspect using the stolen troop car on the New Jersey Turnpike southbound at milepost 74.7 in South Brunswick. During the interaction, the suspect stole cash from the driver. At 7:19 a.m., the suspect fueled the troop car at a gas station on St. George Avenue in Colonia, N.J. and left without paying. At 7:30 a.m., the suspect stopped a cab at the Woodbridge Center Mall in Woodbridge, N.J. and stole cash from the driver. No weapons were brandished during any of the incidents.
This is an active investigation, and we continue to work cooperatively with North Brunswick Police Department and local law enforcement. There is no further information available at this time. Anyone concerned or suspicious about the validity of an officer’s identification should call 9-1-1 to report the information and seek confirmation of the officer’s credentials.
Ridgewood NJ, Multiple injuries were reported in a two (2) vehicle crash on the Garden State Parkway northbound at mile marker 164.3, Paramus on Thursday afternoon, 09/14. Paramus Police and EMS responded along with a NJ State Trooper from the Troop D, Bloomfield based barracks. One (1) vehicle wound up off of the roadway in the grassy center median. A flatbed tow truck removed both wrecked vehicles from the highway.

Newark, N.J., Catching speeders is one of the things troopers do on the Turnpike. Trooper Robert Ravotto, Detective I Jason Kazan, Trooper II Robert Ciecwisz, and Detective Robert Kilmurray caught a different kind of speeder yesterday when they assisted with the swift delivery of a baby girl on the southbound side of the New Jersey Turnpike.
The expecting mother was being driven by her husband to her doctor for a check-up when her water surprisingly broke, which was prior to her due date. The couple called 911 and stopped at milepost 106.5 where they waited for responding troopers and first aid.
Troopers Kazan, Ciecwisz, and Kilmurray arrived at 2:43 p.m. Just two minutes later, at 2:45 p.m., they successfully helped mom deliver a baby girl. As they provided first aid to both, Trooper I Robert Ravotto, a certified EMT, arrived to assist. Trooper Ravotto immediately tied the umbilical cord, wrapped the baby in a blanket, and cleared her airway. The troopers continued to provide first aid to both until the first aid squad arrived, which was delayed due to traffic conditions.
Mom and baby were transported to University Medical Center in Newark where they were last reported as doing well. All of the assisting troopers were commended by University staff for their efforts, which helped prevent mom and baby from going into shock due to the cold and windy weather conditions.
