PARAMUS — Route 4 westbound at Forest Avenue is closed as police investigate an attempted car theft that resulted in an officer firing a weapon, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said via Twitter.
One of four suspects died, he added. The other three suspects are in custody.
According to Molinelli, the driver struck a police officer while fleeing. The officer fired his gun, and the car struck a highway divider. The driver got out of the car, but later was pronounced dead at the hospital. It was not clear whether the suspect was killed by gunfire or from injuries sustained in the crash.

THE RECORD
The scenes from the final round of golf’s final major won’t soon be forgotten. Against a perilously setting sun, some of the world’s best players dueled atop a rapidly changing leader board, waging a battle rife with drama and thick with tension, fueled by fantastic shots and heart-stopping mistakes.
It was a PGA Championship that brought us so much, culminating in a second straight major win for Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland.
And yet, the tournament was as remarkable for what it didn’t have as what it did.
No Tiger Woods in the final round? No problem.
Woods has not been a factor this golf season, his advancing age and balky back keeping him out of action for months and putting him on the wrong side of the cut line when he rushed into action at the PGA. The doubts grow ever stronger that Woods will conquer his stated career goal of surpassing Jack Nicklaus’ 18 major titles (Woods has 14), and the most famous player of his generation won’t even participate this week in The Barclays, the first step in the season-ending FedEx Cup.
But Rory will. The world’s No. 1 player is bringing his surging game and meteoric profile to Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus. For a sport in need of new faces, McIlroy is making his case as the first Woods replacement in years. He won’t ever match Woods’ mass appeal and crossover popularity, but for the golf purist and traditional fan, he’s a very welcome sight.
The way McIlroy won at Valhalla in Louisville, Ky., the way he carried his lead into Sunday morning, lost it across a middling front nine and roared back to win, was, well, Tiger-esque.

After a decade of fighting the installation, the Paramus Zoning Board of Adjustment reluctantly chose a location for a cell phone tower.
A judge recently ruled against the board in a lawsuit filed by Sprint and T-Mobile after their application was denied by the zoning board.
At a June 26 meeting, the zoning board heard additional testimony from the applicant and then opened the meeting to the public on comments and questions.
All zoning board members except for Walter Vavosa voted in favor of the Church of Nazarene site.
“We have an obligation to choose a site,” Zoning Board Chairman James Huffman said. “We denied this application because we didn’t like it, but we were told by the judge that we have to choose a site.”
About a decade ago, Sprint and T-Mobile filed a joint application before the zoning board to bring a cell tower into the borough in one of two sites on East Midland Avenue, the Church of Nazarene or the Ambulance Corps building.
The applicants proposed building a monopole, a tower that had antenna branches stretching out from the pole and resembles a tree. Ultimately the board denied the application, stating among several reasons that the benefits did not outweigh the detriments to the community.

PARAMUS — Panicked shoppers ran screaming from the Westfield Garden State Plaza on Saturday night believing they heard gunshots, which law enforcement officials later said was actually “falling metal stanchions.” The stanchions were knocked down as people ran because of a car fire in the parking lot that caused the car’s tires to pop.
“No shots” were fired, Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said in an email at 11:55 p.m.
A large police presence had remained at the mall late into the night, many of them around the main entrance to Macy’s department store, as a Bergen County SWAT team and borough police searched inside stores to make sure that there hadn’t been a shooting.
Law-enforcement officials quickly determined that they didn’t need the same kind of police presence that they called on Nov. 4 when a man fired shots inside the mall before killing himself.
“It doesn’t appear to be a shooting,” Brian Higgins, chief of the Bergen County Police Department, said late Saturday, but he quickly added that authorities are taking every precaution to make sure that is the case. Instead, he said, the sounds of tires popping from the car fire, which occurred at about the same time as people called 911 about shots being fired, is “the best anyone can assume” about the cause of the panic.

THE RECORD
As dawn emerged on Valentine’s Day, three figures approached a glass storefront of The Jewelry Center in Paramus, remained for a few seconds as if scoping out the store, then walked away in different directions.
Three minutes later, the back of a Ford pickup slammed through the doors and crashed into a jewelry counter. Then, two thieves quickly entered, hooked up a cable from the truck to a nearby safe and dragged it out of the store. A stolen backhoe was then used to load the safe into a getaway vehicle, police have said.
How one of the most brazen jewelry store heists in Paramus went down — a job that netted the thieves $250,000 worth of jewelry — was captured on high-definition black-and-white footage released by Paramus police on Tuesday. The revealing 15-minute silent video is expected to assist authorities in determining how the crime happened and who may have been involved. Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said he also hopes it will generate tips from the public.

The Valley Hospital is in negotiations to buy the site in Paramus that global parcel distributor UPS is vacating, several commercial real estate sources said Monday.
The Ridgewood-based hospital, which has been scouting for land in Bergen County to expand its services, is looking to purchase UPS’ data-processing and software development facility on Winters Avenue, sources said.
The parcel distribution company’s site is at 640, 650 and 670 Winters Ave., not far from Route 17. That location is near a 128,000-square-foot facility Valley Hospital already has in Paramus, the Robert and Audrey Luckow Pavilion at 1 Valley Health Plaza, behind the Fashion Center shopping mall.
