PARAMUS — Route 4 westbound at Forest Avenue is closed as police investigate an attempted car theft that resulted in an officer firing a weapon, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said via Twitter.

One of four suspects died, he added. The other three suspects are in custody.

According to Molinelli, the driver struck a police officer while fleeing. The officer fired his gun, and the car struck a highway divider. The driver got out of the car, but later was pronounced dead at the hospital. It was not clear whether the suspect was killed by gunfire or from injuries sustained in the crash.
