Trenton NJ, from the office the NJ attorney General, New Jersey State employees may have received emails impersonating the NJ Office of the Attorney General (OAG). While the communications may appear to be sent from the email address associated with njoag, it originated from a different source. While these messages have been blocked, we are making you aware out of an abundance of caution and ask that you be alert to phishing emails and spoofing techniques that can be detected by carefully examining senders’ email addresses.

NJOHSP : Exercise Caution During Job Search

Ridgewood NJ, according NJ OFFICE OF HOMELAND SECURITY AND PREPAREDNESS ,  Job seekers are urged to exercise caution during their job search, as they could be targeted with fraudulent offers via phishing emails, social media, or SMS text messaging, according to NJCCIC. Threat actors entice their victims with promises of opportunities that are “too good to be true” to deliver malware, steal funds or collect personally identifiable information. These schemes may cost victims thousands of dollars and negatively impact their credit scores, according to the FBI. Job seekers are encouraged to research potential employers before providing sensitive information to unknown senders. The NJCCIC also recommends reviewing its Identity Theft and Compromised PII product for additional guidance.

Warning: Phishing Emails Impersonate NJ MVC

Phishing emails are being sent to New Jersey state employees and the public regarding driver’s license updates, similar to recently circulated SMS text scams. These messages claim that the recipient needs to update their information with the Social Security Administration to avoid suspension of their license. These phishing email includes a link that, if clicked, directs the user to a malicious website that appears to be a French news site. The website is now identified as malicious by a number of anti-virus programs; however, new websites  – as well as different sender emails and subject lines – may be used in subsequent phishing campaigns. Email and text-based phishing messages impersonating the MVC may be targeting New Jersey residents in part due to the rollout of REAL ID.

FTC Warns of Unemployment Benefit Scams

Ridgewood NJ, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warned of threat actors sending phishing emails and text messages purporting to be from state workforce agency (SWA) websites. These emails contain links that, if clicked, direct users to spoofed unemployment benefit websites requesting users to enter personally identifiable information (PII) or other sensitive information. This data can be used to apply for unemployment benefits and/or commit identity theft.
