Ridgewood Girls Cross Country celebrates its 4th straight win and course record at the Bergen County Meet of Champions

The Lou Molino Bergen County Meet of Champions on Saturday at Darlington Park in Mahwah wasn’t just the fastest ever in the 38 year history of the girls meet, it was also one of the fastest county races in New Jersey history!!!

Just how fast was it???

Four girls broke 18 minutes, led by Catherine Pagano of Northern Highlands, who missed her own course record by one second with a winning time of 17:30!!!

Before the race there had never been more than one girl in a single race go sub 18 at Darlington Park. And before this race only four girls in course history had gone under 18-EVER!!!!!

The sub 18 runners at the Bergen County Meet of Champions. From right to left-Catherine Pagano (Northern Highlands), Julia Guerra (Indian Hills), Sam Halvorsen (Ridgewood), and Carleen Jeffers (Ridgewood)(Jim Lambert | NJ Advance Media)

Behind Pagano was Julia Guerra of Indian Hills, second in 17:57-the sixth fastest time in course history. Ridgewood’s Sam Halvorsen was third in 17:59, the seventh fastest time in course history, and Ridgewood’s Carleen Jeffers was fourth in 17:59, now tied with Halvorsen for the seventh fastest time ever run at Darlington.

Want more?

How about the Ridgewood girls!!!

Ridgewood, No. 7 in the state, averaged 18:42.8, shredding the course record average of 19:00.6 set last week by Northern Highlands.

It was a truly epic day as Bergen County’s finest simply crushed the course!!!!

That’s what happens when great runners, good conditions and a deep talent pool collide!

Ridgewood’s record breaking average led to a fourth straight team title and record 28th overall as Ridgewood outscored runner-up and No. 8 Northern Highlands, 45-66. No. 18 IHA was third with 79.

A severe test awaits the Ridgewood High School girls soccer team Sunday in the Bergen County tournament semifinals, but this is nothing new.

The challenge comes from the nation’s No. 1 team, Northern Highlands, at 2 p.m. Sunday at River Dell High School. The Maroons have faced the unbeaten Highlanders five times in the past two seasons, winless in those occasions, but each time having presented a stout challenge.

“We’re familiar with them,” Ridgewood coach Jeff Yearing said Tuesday in mild understatement. “But we’ve been playing an advanced schedule to prepare us to play against the best. Our league [schedule] dictated that. Now, it’s a matter of course and with this team, I believe we can play with anybody. If we’re on our game, I feel confident in our ability to win.”

RIDGEWOOD — A year after completing a long climb back to the top following an eight-year drought in the state-sectional tournament, the Ridgewood High School girls tennis wasn’t satisfied with just planting a flag at the summit. It wanted to set up camp there.

The Maroons have done just that, as they bested Bergen Tech, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon to claim their second consecutive North 1, Group 4 championship.

“This just shows we’ve come here this far and we’re here to stay. We’re not going anywhere,” senior co-captain Swathi Ragulan said.

Ridgewood (12-3) is scheduled to take on Central section champ West Windsor-Plainsboro South (14-0) in the State Group 4 semifinals at 11 a.m. today at Mercer County Park in West Windsor. The winner of that match will meet the survivor of North 2 champion Ridge (15-1) versus South champion Lenape (12-2) at 3 p.m.

RHS lost last year in the semifinal round against Cherry Hill East.

The Maroons entered the sectional final with a slightly different lineup than they had employed throughout the season.

Ridgewood H.S. Athletic Hall of Fame: ‘Quintuple threat’ Nancy Hogan to be inducted

Editor’s Note: This is part of a series of stories profiling the 2014 inductees into the Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

In January of 1993, a letter was received by the athletic department at Ridgewood High School nominating Nancy Hogan as a candidate for what was going to be the first class honored in the RHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

That class was never inducted, and the Hall of Fame did not officially get organized until 2004 — 30 years Hogan’s RHS graduation. Her nominator stated at that time, “Nancy epitomizes the high standards of conduct and sportsmanship we look for in our Ridgewood students”

Today, when one looks at what Hogan achieved as a student-athlete, and then what she achieved as a coach of student-athletes, it is easy to see why that nominator was able to make such a bold statement in 1993.

Each year, for preparation purposes, the Ridgewood High School girls cross-country team enters the Shore Coaches Invitational on the first Saturday in October.

The Maroons’ main goal is to log some miles on the Holmdel Park course that hosts state-championship meets at season’s end. The Invitational also affords them an early opportunity to see where they stack up against statewide competition.

The verdict from Saturday’s Shore championship division race? RHS is in a short stack.

Led by junior Sam Halvorsen and senior Carleen Jeffers, Ridgewood averaged 20:17 per runner and finished second to Red Bank Catholic, 50-71, while holding off Princeton (72 points) and West Windsor-Plainsboro South (73).

“We had a great day,” Maroon coach Jacob Brown commented on his website. He added that “171 schools entered the seven varsity races, and 124 finished with team scores. We were second overall on a time basis.”

CLIFTON – Coming into the season, Ridgewood knew it had to make the most of the first half of the schedule. With a young and inexperienced team, the Maroons had five winnable games to open the year.

The quintet was completed Friday night as Ridgewood scored on the first play from scrimmage and never looked back. The 47-12 defeat of Clifton sets up an intriguing matchup next week with Paramus, the first team with a winning record the Maroons will face.

“Now we’ll find out how good we are,” Ridgewood coach Chuck Johnson said. “I can tell you that we are a whole lot better than we were at the beginning of the season, but just how good will be determined.”

The Maroons certainly took care of winless Clifton, which was playing its first game at the newly renovated Joseph Grecco Field. After the opening kickoff went out of bounds, Drew Granski was able to stretch out a sweep left and find a hole, racing 65 yards for a touchdown.

Editor’s Note: This is part of a series of stories profiling the 2014 inductees into the Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

In 1992, Ridgewood High School girls soccer head coach Jeff Yearing stated for a newspaper article that “Rachel Grygiel is every coach’s dream and every opponent’s nightmare.” Truer words never have been spoken about an athlete that has been inducted into the RHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 1993 graduate will receive that honor formally later this month. Beyond her productivity on the pitch, Grygiel reflected the complete embodiment of the term “student-athlete.” Her desire to achieve academically and to serve her community reflected the same passion and desire she brought to the field each day.

RIDGEWOOD – You can just see Mitch Campbell’s eyes light up when he knows that a pass play has been called. The senior running back has been a revelation in Ridgewood’s passing game, and on Thursday night he had the big plays.

Campbell hauled in five passes for 141 yards and a touchdown, and it was his work in the first quarter that helped set the tone for Ridgewood, which remained undefeated.

Ridgewood recorded a second straight shutout, 35-0 over Kennedy, and continued its early season offensive show. It marked the 63rd time in coach Chuck Johnson’s 31 seasons that his team has recorded a shutout.

While the defense was not spectacular, Ridgewood (4-0) did produce three turnovers on fumbles, and for the second time this season stopped a team on a fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line. Sophomore inside linebacker James Mondi, in his second varsity start, had 12 tackles and a forced fumble.

The offense did its job early, taking the opening kickoff and scoring on six plays covering 57 yards. Campbell had catches of 18 and 17 yards to set up sophomore Drew Granski’s 2-yard touchdown.

“It all starts with the offensive line,” Campbell said. “They’ve done a great job of pass blocking all year and [senior quarterback Matt] Donovan is putting it right there. All I have to do is run under it.”

RIDGEWOOD — Heading into Thursday night’s home game versus Kennedy, the Ridgewood High School football team was looking not only to continue its winning ways but also to continue to develop the chemistry, experience and execution it will need as the schedule toughens later this month.

There were plenty of positives through the Maroons’ first three games, and much of that had to do with the way the sophomores injected themselves into the lineup and made key contributions.

Members of the 2004 Ridgewood High School North 1, Group 4 championship football team gather on the field of RHS Stadium at halftime of last Friday’s game to be honored on the 10th anniversary of their state-sectional title.

The youth movement can be a double-edged sword, however. RHS benefitted from an early schedule in which its first three opponents were a combined 2-7, and the team won all three games by an average of 46-4 (Kennedy was 0-3 entering Thursday). That necessitates tempering any enthusiasm a bit in assessing the results.

Still, every win is important, and the schedule is what it is. Ridgewood need not make excuses for winning the games it is supposed to win while giving some of its rookies a dose of confidence at the varsity level.

RIDGEWOOD – Football fans weren’t the only people seated in the stands at Ridgewood High School on Thursday night.

Some of the crowd turned out to see hometown hero Charlotte Samuels be recognized by school leaders for the physical and mental feat of being the youngest person to complete the Triple Crown of open water swimming.

Charlotte, a junior at Ridgewood High School, was brought to the 50-yard line before the start of the Maroons football game against the Kennedy High School Knights. Joined by her parents, the boys and girls swim teams, her swimming coach and the principal and vice principal, the 16-year-old was lauded for her accomplishment.

“We’ve all faced hardships and challenges,” Principal Thomas Gorman said. But swimming for more than 20 hours, some of the time in the dark, feeling cold, lonely and afraid makes Charlotte “a champion and inspiration to all of us.”

Charlotte swam around Manhattan Island in June, across the Catalina Channel in California in August and through the English Channel last month.

Since being shut out by Northern Highlands on Sept. 17, the Ridgewood High School girls soccer team has paid the favor forward twice.

Senior goalkeeper Colleen Berry stopped both shots she faced in the Maroons’ 5-0 smothering of Hackensack last Friday. She needed to make only three saves to help RHS lock down Tenafly, 1-0 on Tuesday.

The back-to-back wins raised Ridgewood’s record to 5-2 entering Saturday’s noon match at Demarest.

Sophomore forward Val Diaz helped fuel the offensive outburst versus Hackensack with a pair of goals. Senior Aidan Trevisan and sophomores Riley Ricciardi and Emma LaFrance tallied a goal apiece, and seniors Maddie Philips and Dayna Bussanich each notched an assist.

Ricciardi scored the lone goal at Tenafly in the first half, as the Maroons launched 22 shots on net in the win.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Just nine matches into the season, the Ridgewood High School girls tennis team has made it clear that even with several new coming underclassmen playing prominent roles, it is still one of the top teams in the area.

The Maroons have a sophomore and freshman holding down their top two singles spots and all the players that returned from last season’s North 1, Group 4 title team are in different positions, but nothing has seemed to faze this RHS team.

“I think they’re beginning to actualize their potential and see what they’re capable of,” head coach Medha Kirtane said in a phone interview Wednesday.

And hopes are high for the team heading into this weekend’s Bergen County tournament at Old Tappan.

“We’re just excited to be in a competitive environment with a number of wonderful dreams that are going to push us in every single draw,” Kirtane said. “It’s a great intense environment to be in that only makes you better.”

RIDGEWOOD — Kerry Callaghan is the new kid on the block who isn’t entirely new — much like her gymnastics team’s most recent opponent.

The Ridgewood High School junior grew up in the village but was not with the Maroons for the past two years. In 2012, the Callaghans moved to suburban Dallas, where Kerry attended Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas.

Her family came back to Ridgewood this summer, and she is now a part of the RHS program for which two of her three older sisters competed.

“It feels good, seeing my old friends again and doing gymnastics with girls I’ve competed with since the third or fourth grade,” Callaghan said.

The Maroons are equally happy about her return. Callaghan’s scores on vault (8.75) and floor (8.4) counted toward their team total versus Holy Angels on Wednesday, and Ridgewood needed every tenth to secure a 102.875-102.225 win in NJGL A Division action.
