A severe test awaits the Ridgewood High School girls soccer team Sunday in the Bergen County tournament semifinals, but this is nothing new.

The challenge comes from the nation’s No. 1 team, Northern Highlands, at 2 p.m. Sunday at River Dell High School. The Maroons have faced the unbeaten Highlanders five times in the past two seasons, winless in those occasions, but each time having presented a stout challenge.

“We’re familiar with them,” Ridgewood coach Jeff Yearing said Tuesday in mild understatement. “But we’ve been playing an advanced schedule to prepare us to play against the best. Our league [schedule] dictated that. Now, it’s a matter of course and with this team, I believe we can play with anybody. If we’re on our game, I feel confident in our ability to win.”

Since being shut out by Northern Highlands on Sept. 17, the Ridgewood High School girls soccer team has paid the favor forward twice.

Senior goalkeeper Colleen Berry stopped both shots she faced in the Maroons’ 5-0 smothering of Hackensack last Friday. She needed to make only three saves to help RHS lock down Tenafly, 1-0 on Tuesday.

The back-to-back wins raised Ridgewood’s record to 5-2 entering Saturday’s noon match at Demarest.

Sophomore forward Val Diaz helped fuel the offensive outburst versus Hackensack with a pair of goals. Senior Aidan Trevisan and sophomores Riley Ricciardi and Emma LaFrance tallied a goal apiece, and seniors Maddie Philips and Dayna Bussanich each notched an assist.

Ricciardi scored the lone goal at Tenafly in the first half, as the Maroons launched 22 shots on net in the win.

Girls Soccer: Ridgewood does ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in memory of coach Jack Elwood

Girls Soccer: Ridgewood does ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in memory of coach Jack Elwood

High school athletes throughout New Jersey are taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. But the cause has a special meaning for Ridgewood.

The Ridgewood High School girls soccer team took the challenge recently in memory of their former coach, Jack Elwood. Elwood, who coached the team for 15 years, died of ALS in 2010. He donated his body to science and took part in a longitudinal study at Columbia University to help find a curse for the disease.

The team challenged the rest of the Big North girls soccer teams to take the challenge, as well as the Ridgewood boys soccer team.

“Jack was one of the most courageous and inspirational people I have ever known. Jack chose to life his life fully,” Ridgewood coach Jeff Yearing said in the video. “Today we’re trying to live up to Jack’s standard and hopefully this helps. …Jack, we remember you. We do this for you, my friend.”
