bike_at_rtrainstation_theridgewoodblog

“To claim that Ridgewood has a bad commute relative to other nice / safe / high quality of life suburban towns around NYC is simply not true. I have been commuting since 1986. When I commuted from Hoboken / Manhattan it was shorter but who wants to raise a family in Hoboken or Manhattan? And who can afford a neighborhood you would raise children in Manhattan other than Russian oligarchs and billionaires? The Ridgewood train is served by Main and Bergen lines making it uniquely more convenient than other train lines. Prior to the midtown connection some opted for the bus to PA so that new connection is yet another option making Ridgewood better than most other NYC commuter suburbs. I would be curious to what town(s) have such excellent train/bus service to NYC that it is cheaper and better than Ridgewood? Certainly not the LIRR or Metro North to Connecticut. I suppose Greenwich CT is OK but not noticeably better than Ridgewood and they have to switch to the 4-5-6 to get downtown so really that whole train service is heavily preferenced to midtown. Garden City LI for example is OK too I suppose but they have no choice but one line into Penn and then subway downtown which I guess is not as bad as coming down from Grand Central. At least we have about the same convenience to both midtown and downtown. And please tell me the suburban town that is so much cheaper and nicer with a fast convenient commute and high quality of life? Not near NYC, that is for sure. This is just another one of these things that the town-complainer posts stupid uninformed comments about in his or her eternal dislike of Ridgewood. I wish I had a dollar for every time this same person leaves a comment saying they are moving out. I think they do it 10 or 20 times a week. “

NJ TRANSIT CUSTOMERS ADVISED TO MONITOR SERVICE INFORMATION DURING FORECASTED WEEKEND WINTER STORM

jpg4

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, NJ TRANSIT anticipates regular weekend service on its rail, bus, light rail and Access Link services for Saturday and Sunday as long as weather conditions permit safe operation.  Parts of New Jersey are forecasted to experience snow and icy roadway conditions with rapid freezing of wet surfaces. There is also a possibility of high wind conditions, which could impact the overhead wires on rail and light rail service.

IMPORTANT:  Due to the potential snow and ice accumulation in conjunction with possible local and county travel bans, there is the potential for all bus service — including bus service to/from PABT– to be suspended at some point during the weekend.  Customers will have advance notice of a service suspension.  All customers should closely monitor njtransit.com, download the mobile app with push notifications, sign up for My Transit alerts, or monitor social media and broadcast news reports for the latest status of the system.

Reader suggests ways to improve the Ridgewood Commute

First – add the damn spaces at the train station right away. What is the delay???

Next – cancel the garage. Repave that lot and re-stripe it, reduce the access~egress curb cuts to just one or two. This will add a ton of spaces.

Next – reduce the cost of commuter parking passes. It is ridiculously high now (but not as high as Voigt had suggested when he laughingly said it should be $1500 because the people in Ridgewood could afford it).

Next – put parking at the lot behind Ben and Jerry’s where that old garage was. Plenty of space there and only a two block walk to the train station.

Next – make the meters stop at 6 PM once again. 8 PM is way too late. Also, please have FREE parking on Saturdays throughout the year.

Reader says , “The cost of an annual parking pass as a resident is almost double other towns”

Ridgewood Trainstateionparking theridgewoodblog.net 1

The cost of parking at the train station for residents is now 11.00 a day, 55 a week, 220 a month. That is not the cost of an annual parking pass just what you pay now as a resident. Almost double other towns. Also almost impossible for a resident to get a spot after 7am as out of town permits are also sold with no preference for residents. Traffic in the area is just awful getting in and out of the station with no easy pickup or discharge

Finally no overnight parking so god forbid you work at night or decide to stay in NYC for the night.

The change in Secaucus to get to midtown is ridiculous. RW has lost its role as a easy commuter station. Residents are neglected, trains are unreliable, the buses are problematic, parking is expensive, and village/school/ state taxes are a mess. Does anyone see this getting better or plans to address.

Where to go? Great question. But with kids out of schools, 35k in taxes, terrible and expense commute, 110k school budget with declining rankings and property values declining maybe the question is how soon to go ?

When many of my neighbors can appeal their taxes every year due to declining values is that a good indicator of our future values?

Reader says , “It’s tough for Ridgewood to compete with Midtown Direct Service”

Ridgewood_Train_station_train-_is_coming_theridgewoodblog

The Midtown Direct train ride through certain Essex County towns straight into Penn Station (34th street) in Manhattan remains the gold standard for NJ residents. It’s tough for Ridgewood to compete with that, even though we do enjoy the most convenient (i.e., combination of short and frequent trips from one train station) train service yo and from the Secaucus Transfer station of any town in Bergen County. Now that the inbound Lincoln Tunnel has been hobbled due to desperately needed road work, the permanent lane shutdown from this road work creates an unavoidable bottleneck that hurts the efficiency of the many Coach USA buses that carry commuters from the Ridgewood Park-n-Ride to Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd street) in NYC midtown. Hopefully that road work will be completed soon. Also hopefully, all of the West Bergen, Weehawken, Hoboken and Secaucus mayors are very polite to Governor Murphey and his political enforcers during this period of cross-Hudson traffic “difficulties”. Or is that just a republican problem (LOL).

“Unless you work in Hoboken, the Exchange Place area of Jersey City, or lower Manhattan (near World Trade), the commute to NYC from Ridgewood is horrendous, time consuming, and undependable. Northern NJ communities served by NJ Transit’s Midtown Direct Service are becoming increasing more appealing to home buyers, as evidenced by the skyrocketing prices of homes and bidding wars taking place in Montclair, Glen Ridge, Chatham, Millburn, Summit, etc.”

Route 495 lane closures to begin in mid-August

North Bergen NJ, New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the lane closures necessary as part of the rehabilitation of the Route 495 Bridge over Route 1&9 and Paterson Plank Road in North Bergen are expected to begin in mid-August.

The work is scheduled to start on Friday, August 10, with the closure of the 31st Street ramp from Kennedy Boulevard to Route 495 westbound, with traffic detoured onto Patterson Plank Road. A week later, on Friday, August 17, one lane of Route 495 in each direction will be closed, limiting the roadway capacity and causing severe congestion. NJDOT will provide more detailed information as the start of the lane closures nears.

The exclusive bus lane (XBL) will remain operational during construction. This construction is expected to last for about two and a half years while the entire bridge deck, parapets, light fixtures, guiderail, and drainage are replaced. The entire project is expected to be completed in summer 2021.

The $90.3 million state-funded project began in September 2017 with local street improvements. The work in the first phase, which was necessary before the lane closures could be implemented, has been taking place under the bridge and along the Paterson Plank Road – Union Turnpike corridor.

The project to rehabilitate the nine-span viaduct includes repairs and reconstruction of the bridge deck, replacement and strengthening of deteriorated structural steel, and the repair and painting of the substructure. Construction will be accomplished in stages by first making improvements to local streets in the surrounding areas that will need to handle some of the diverted traffic during bridge construction
