Ridgewood NJ, for months the Ridgewood blog has followed the Village of Ridgewood’s war on Pickleball . We catalogued everything from the troubles at the Glen School courts ,mirroring issues of the 1970’s Tennis craze which resulted in numerous police responses to loud tennis matches . More recently the Ridgewood blog mischaracterized a resident’s sarcastic comments at a Village Council meeting , equating pickleball complaints by neighbors being akin to Central Business District neighbors complaining about train whistles .

RIDGEWOOD – Two cousins have been indicted for firing more than 40 bullets into the Old Paramus Reformed Church, damaging the nationally registered historic structure.

No one was inside the East Glen Avenue house of worship on Nov. 16 and Dec. 26, 2014 when police say Joseph Galli, 22, of Somerville fired a high-powered AR15 at it, breaking a stained glass window dating back to 1875 and sending one bullet careening through the front of the building and out a rear wall. His cousin Alexander Norrell, 23,of Ridgewood, was also charged.

An eight-count indictment says a grand jury found that Norrell unlawfully possessed a large capacity ammunition weapon. Both men were indicted on second degree gun charges for an Mk-4 assault rifle, a sawed-off shot gun and another rifle, a CN Romarm SA/Cugir PSL 7.62x54r. They also were indicted for causing more than $2,000 in property damage and possessing a sawed-off shot gun.

RIDGEWOOD — Congregants at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church plan to spend much of this month extolling the good works of their longtime leader, the Rev. Andy Nelson.

Nelson, who has served the Linwood Avenue church for more than 20 years, has announced his plans to retire. His last day as the church’s ecclesiastic will be June 30.

Over the course of his 32-year career, Pastor Nelson has served at other churches — in Westwood, where he was the assistant pastor at Zion Lutheran Church from 1984 to 1987, and in Verona, where he spent seven years.

Nelson said his retirement is something of a double-edged sword: As he approaches 65, he’s eager to spend time with his new grandson but knows he’ll miss preaching to his congregation.

“I think about the interactions and the people we have become so close to,” the pastor said. “I have done baptisms and weddings for the same family and have been there in the midst of hard times they’ve gone through. … I will miss the everyday experience of bringing the Gospel to people and being a part of their lives.”

Terry Shine, the congregation’s president, said several events have been planned around Nelson’s departure.

Representatives from the World Mission Society Church of God returned to the Planning Board on April 21 with a revised site plan for work that has already been completed, as well as proposed seepage pits.

Attorney Marc Leibman and Engineer Robert Costa previously appeared before the board on March 3 and discussion revolved around a revision of spaces in the parking lot as well as lighting and the seepage pits to aid drainage on the Godwin Avenue property.

At the end of that meeting, the board asked Costa and Leibman to touch base with the village’s professional staff to work out a safer parking setup and less impactful lighting scheme.

Parking spaces deemed unsafe by the village staff were removed and Costa said the entire parking lot will be restriped to better conform to the necessary aisle width to allow safe travel for vehicles.

Spaces compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, including one that was adjacent to a refuse area, were moved to the eastern side of the building at the request of village professionals.

Costa said that side of the building also provides handicap access to the church. The plans show a striped or painted crosswalk that forms a path into the building for those with special needs.

Residents fighting plan to place antenna on top of Ridgewood church

About a dozen residents who live near the West Side Presbyterian Church are opposing a plan by Verizon Wireless to put a 3-foot cell antenna on the top of the cross, saying at a zoning board meeting Nov. 11 that it would change the character of the neighborhood.

The telecommunications company is asking for a use and height variance from the Zoning Board of Adjustment to build what they’re calling a “micro site” antenna at the location, 6 S. Monroe St., to help alleviate a significant gap in coverage.

The antenna, which is not permitted in a residential zone, would bring the total building height to 68.5 feet where 30 feet is permitted by law. Currently the building stands at 65.5 feet when measured to the top of the cross.

Initial plans from Verizon showed the building height with the antenna at 83 feet, which Verizon attorney Warren Stilwell said was caused by an error in measuring that has been fixed.

Because of the new, lower building height, radio frequency engineer Glenn Pierson said about 10 fewer houses would receive coverage from the previous estimate of a 700-home coverage area north of West Ridgewood Avenue on North Monroe Street, Beachwood Road, Monte Vista Avenue, Sheridan Terrace and other roadways. The coverage would not reach West Glen Avenue.
