House Republicans say Dems trying to run out clock on government shutdown
By Julian Pecquet and Molly K. Hooper – 09/29/13 04:22 PM E

Trading in colorful metaphors just hours after sending a spending bill to the Senate, the conservative group, led by Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris-Rodgers (R-Wash.), accused Democrats of refusing to negotiate. The Senate and President Obama have vowed to reject the Republican’s effort to delay the president’s healthcare law by one year.

Republicans toss insults at Harry Reid

By BURGESS EVERETT | 9/29/13 6:03 PM EDT

Washington’s shutdown blame game is already in full force – and the government isn’t even closed yet.

About 20 House Republicans gathered on the steps of the United States Senate on Sunday afternoon, a time usually reserved in the city for watching the Redskins. Instead, tourists gathered to watch Republican after Republican demanding that the Senate come back in session, accusing the Democratic controlled chamber of being “lazy” and Majority Leader Harry Reid of taking his ball and going home rather than negotiating with GOP leadership over the weekend.

‘A big act’: Newark mayor’s ‘urban legends’
By Michael Gartland
September 21, 2013 | 8:06pm

Gunshots rang out between the red-brick apartment buildings at Pilgrim Village, and Newark Mayor Cory Booker ran to the noise. When Wazn Miller — the 19-year-old who was shot and bleeding — fell, Booker was there to catch him.
It was April 19, 2004. Just another day in Newark.

“It seemed like a whirlwind was going on around me, so much was flashing through my mind as I sat there just trying to hold this child as his breathing stopped,” Booker told an audience at Yale three years later. “The ambulance finally came, pushed me out of the way, ripped open his shirt where I now saw three gunshot wounds in his front, one in his side — and he was dead.”

Booker’s breathless retelling of Miller’s tragic end was meant to illustrate one of the “lowest points” in his life in the Brick City. It’s the type of story that has made him famous and wealthy, a national figure who pundits say looks increasingly “presidential” and will be, more than likely, New Jersey’s next US senator.

The only problem is, the story isn’t completely true.

2013 Ridgewood Jazz & Blues Feast
September 18,2013
the Ridgewood Guild

Ridgewood NJ, On Sunday Sept 15 The Ridgewood Guild hosted its inaugural Jazz Feast. This one day event drew a crowd of over 2,000 people to Memorial Park at Van Neste Square right here in Ridgewood.

It was truly a happening in the park! A diverse selection of jazz musicians brought down the house. The show opened with jazz and blues songstress Antoinette Montague. She performed with Dave Chamberlain’s Band of Bones, giving her that big band sound that people just adore. Special guest guitarist King Solomon Hicks was pure joy. Antoinette was followed by front man Rob Paparozzi who’s jazz, rock, and blues harmonica playing was equally appealing. Rob has played with industry luminaries such as B. B. King, Whitney Houston, Carole King, and Cyndi Lauper to name a few. The show ended with a stellar performance by one of the industries most revered drummers, Winard Harper. Harper on drums with his band as back up was magical! A special guest appearance by the legendary Steve Turri made the day even more special.

16 of Ridgewood’s finest restaurants were on hand serving up some of the best food that our village has to offer. A Beer and Wine Garden was on hand with the Garden State’s Ventimiglia Vineyards and Kohler Distributing Co.

The Ridgewood Guild would like to thank The Valley Hospital, Park Avenue Saab, and Applebee’s/Shannon Rose for sponsoring our event.

23,116,928 to 20,618,000: Households on Food Stamps Now Outnumber All Households in Northeast U.S.

September 17, 2013 – 12:31 PM
By Terence P. Jeffrey

(CNSNews.com) – A record 23,116,928 American households were enrolled in the federal government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)—AKA food stamps—during the month of June, according to data released this month by the Department of Agriculture.

That outnumbers the 20,618,000 households that the Census Bureau estimated were in the entire Northeastern United States as of the second quarter of 2013.

According to the Census Bureau, the Northeast region includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania. Thus, in June, the households receiving food stamps exceeded the total combined households in all of these states.

The 23,116,928 million households on food stamps in June also outnumbered the 15,030,000 home-owning households in the entire Western United States in the second quarter of the year and the 18,018,000 home-owning households in the entire Midwest.

Mass Shootings Fuel Fear, Account for Fraction of Murders
By Annie Linskey – Sep 17, 2013 12:02 AM ET

Mass U.S. shootings such as the bloody rampage at the Washington Navy Yard spur safety concerns and garner intense media attention while statistically accounting for few of the total murders reported nationwide.

In the 30 years through March, 78 public mass shootings occurred in the U.S. — incidents in which four or more people were killed at random by a gunman murdering indiscriminately, according to a report issued that month by the Congressional Research Service. These crimes don’t include gang-related killings or domestic disputes where a person slays relatives or other people linked to the murderer.

People hold candles in remembrance of those affected by gun violence during a vigil at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 16, 2013. Photographer: Greg Kahn/Getty Images

The mass slaughters listed in the report caused the deaths of 547 people. Over the same three decades through 2012, that’s less than a tenth of 1 percent of the 559,347 people the Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates were murdered in America.

“It is a very, very small percentage,” said James Alan Fox, who teaches criminology at Boston’s Northeastern University and co-authored a book about mass shootings called “Extreme Killing,” published in 2011.

In the wake of shootings such as the one in Washington that claimed at least 13 lives, including the alleged shooter, “our tendancy is to go overboard and overreach in terms of trying to increase levels of security,” Fox said. “The fear is greater than the risk.”

“To change a town’s master plan for this is ludicrous”

Valleywood_theridgewoodblog.net_1-300x22512

“To change a town’s master plan for this is ludicrous”

When in doubt, use logic. The Master Plan is the Planning boards reason out and to say no. The Master Plan is the logic for the Council and all involved just to say no.

The Master Plan is the reason and logical way out for all involved.

Sorry Valley, the Master Plan should not be changed and you have wasted a lot of peoples time and money for this ridiculous expansion in Ridgewood. I do not know why the better solution of expanding is no being talked more about in Paramus. Valley is not a hard luck case. You do not have to expand here to survive.

I find it amazing that we are even still entertaining this year after year.

The existing Master Plan should be enough to stop this just as it’s done in years past. Add next to a school and in a residential neighborhood…why is this still going on?

BIG NO TO VALLEYWOOD

Stop the Nonsense

This frame grab from video provided by Fox 29 shows a raging fire in Seaside Park, N.J. on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013.

“Total Destruction.” That’s how Fire Chief Brian Gabriel describes the scene along four blocks of the Seaside boardwalk that were ravaged by fire Thursday.

From Lincoln to Farragut Avenues. there is nothing left but burned out buildings, some still smoldering.

At a press conference this morning, the chief would not confirm how many businesses were destroyed in yesterday’s fire, which ravaged parts of Seaside Heights and Seaside Park.

Power has largely been restored, except for the area directly around where the fire raged Thursday, Gabriel said.

No business owners are being allowed to return yet.

‘Revenge porn’ victim tells story, fights for change
hursday – 9/12/2013, 12:15pm  ET

By Neal Augenstein

WASHINGTON – “It was completely devastating when I first found the pictures – I could feel myself go into shock.”

Holly Jacobs had no idea the racy photographs she’d shared with her boyfriend would be used against her in a publicly humiliating way after they broke up.

revenge27n-4-web

Yet, in 2009 a friend called to say Jacobs’ Facebook account had been hacked and a nude photo was online.

And it got worse.

“My photos and a video of me were up on a revenge porn website,” says Jacobs, who legally changed her name in the aftermath.

With her name, phone number and email address posted online, Jacobs was bombarded with unwanted attention.

Her photos and videos were even sent to her boss.

Revenge porn sites make no bones about why they exist.

‘Artificial egg’ made from PLANTS backed by Bill Gates set to revolutionize cooking goes on sale at Whole Foods
By Mark Prigg In San Francisco
PUBLISHED: 11:06 EST, 10 September 2013 | UPDATED: 11:09 EST, 10 September 2013

A radical ‘artificial egg’ backed by Paypal billionaire Peter Thiel and Bill Gates goes on sale in US supermarkets for the first time today.

Made from plants, it can replace eggs in everything from cakes to mayonnaise – without a chicken ever coming close to the production process.

The team today started selling their ‘plant egg’, called Beyond Eggs, in Whole Foods in California – and say it could soon be available in supermarkets worldwide.

‘We want to take animals out of the equation,’ said Josh Tetrick, the firm’s founder. ‘The food industry is begging for innovation, especially where animals are involved – it is a broken industry.’

Tetrick’s idea was to find a mix of easy-to-grow plants that, when mixed together in the right way, replicate the taste, nutritional values and cooking properties of an egg.

This, he believes will allow the firm to produce its substitute for mass market foods – and to allow developing worlds to grow their own versions with added nutrients.

‘Eggs are functionally incredible, they do everything from hold oil and water in mayo to making the muffin rise and holding scrambled eggs together,’ he said ‘I started to think what if we can find plants that can do this. We have about 12 plants pre-selected, including a pea already widely grown in Canada. There’s also a bean in South Asia that is incredible in scrambled eggs.’
