>NJEA : Socioeconomic Status with failure in Education

>NJEA : Socioeconomic Status with failure in Education

Whenever I’ve had a discussion with Ridgewood teachers about school choice for inner city children, they always scoff at the idea. Explaining that school choice wont matter because it can’t make up for the lack of parental involvement. That the failure of the urban education system rests with the socio-economic conditions of the children and their parents. Only more money will solve the issue. Which is a socialist’s solution for all of society’s ills. We will never be able to raise the standard of living for the uneducated to that of the educated no matter how much money we give them. As we see now, we are running out of money.

The solution is to empower families by providing a system of education that they can hold accountable for the failure or success of their children’s education.

If parents seem uninvolved in the inner cities, perhaps it is because they don’t feel like they have a stake in the system. It is like all else around them, government controls everything. Give the power to choose and they will make sure their children excel. The way out of government dependence is education. And the folks who work in government know this. Keep people stupid and ensure that the government has a purpose; taking care of them. Create independence and we need less government. It is truly an insidious system when the political establishment and government workers do everything they can to ensure poverty and thus guarantee their jobs.

>Ridgewood, based bagel chain Wide World of Bagels opens shop in Mystic Ct.

By Ian Holliday

MYSTIC — New England – particularly Eastern New England – is notorious for having a doughnut shop on every street-corner, often literally. The stiff competition in this region was part of the reason Tim Hortons decided to shutter all of its Rhode Island and Connecticut stores last November.

But though the market for doughnuts in this area was cornered long ago, Elliot Cohen believes there’s an opportunity in Mystic for another doughy, circular food: the bagel.

This summer, Cohen and business partner Scott Handler will open a location of their Ridgewood, N.J.-based bagel chain Wide World of Bagels at the former site of Tim Hortons on East Main Street.

“We’re really excited about equipping it and opening it up,” Handler said.
Cohen, who spends three days each week in a condominium in downtown Mystic, said he began inquiring about the vacant building the day after Tim Hortons closed it. He contacted the town of Stonington to find out who owned the building and ended up working with the owner and Tim Hortons to transfer the lease from the departing chain to him.

>There Is No Male-Female Wage Gap

A study of single, childless urban workers between the ages of 22 and 30 found that women earned 8% more than men

By CARRIE LUKAS

Tuesday is Equal Pay Day—so dubbed by the National Committee for Pay Equity, which represents feminist groups including the National Organization for Women, Feminist Majority, the National Council of Women’s Organizations and others. The day falls on April 12 because, according to feminist logic, women have to work that far into a calendar year before they earn what men already earned the year before.

>NJ Wastes Millions on Clothing Allowances for State Workers: Report
By Beth DeFalco

New Jersey spent more than $3 million this fiscal year on clothing allowances for white-collar workers who aren’t required to wear uniforms, according to a new report from the state comptroller.

Under collective bargaining agreements, New Jersey provides an annual clothing allowance for uniforms to certain employees of $700 a year for full-time workers and $350 for part-time workers. The allowance is a flat amount included in payroll checks and doesn’t require that employees provide a receipt.

>Before you head off to bed, join us in wishing Thomas Jefferson a happy 268th birthday!

>Jefferson on Government:
“With all these blessings, what more is necessary to make us a happy and prosperous people? Still one thing more, fellow citizens — a wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities.”

>Use of "Dads Night " list called a disgrace

>Use of “Dads Night ” list called a disgrace

This is a disgrace. The email used was the yahoo group email for all dadsnight members which includes parents (both dads and moms) from Hawes and Somerville along with dads night alumni to include parents (dads and moms) at BFMS, RHS and those who have no kids left in the district. The individual who sent this email should apologize immediately and retract the inappropriate endorsement. Everyone should support the retraction regardless of who they support as this is such a violation of trust and a misuse of the group email.

This is a parent group using taxpayer facilities for fundraising events. If the Dads Night organization, which I have been a member for years, chooses to be a political arm they must be prohibited from using any public schools for fundraising events.

If this fella is actually and attorney he should be disbarred for stupidity.

Parents of 6-Year-Old Girl Pat Down at Airport Want Procedures Changed
Selena and Todd Drexel Say They’re ‘Struggling to Explain’ Screening to Daughter

April 13, 2011

The family of the 6-year-old girl who received a pat down at airport security in New Orleans said today there needs to be a different screening process for children.

“We struggle to teach our kids to protect themselves, to say ‘no, it’s not ok to touch me in this way in this area,” the girl’s mother, Selena Drexel, said. “Yet here we are saying it’s ok for these people.” If we don’t find other ways we’re making them more vulnerable, she said.

Drexel and her husband, Dr. Todd Drexel, of Bowling Green, Ky., appeared this morning in an exclusive interview with “Good Morning America.”

>Garrett Slams President Obama’s Deficit Reduction Plan

>Garrett Slams President Obama’s Deficit Reduction Plan

WASHINGTON, DC, April 13, 2011 – Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), Vice Chairman of the House Budget Committee and Chairman of the Republican Study Committee’s (RSC) Budget and Spending Task Force, issued the following statement today in response to President Obama’s speech on his so-called deficit reduction plan:

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. The president needs go back to the White House, formulate a new plan, draft a new speech and then try again. Not only does his proposed plan fail to meet the deficit reduction benchmarks set by his own fiscal commission, it doesn’t even come close meeting the benchmarks set by House Republicans. The president needs to take the fiscal crisis facing our country seriously by offering a credible deficit reduction plan that balances the budget in ten years or less without raising taxes on Americans.”

Hello. I’m writing because you are someone who cares about Ridgewood’s schools. As you may know, I am running for re-election to the Ridgewood Board of Education. I’ve been serving on the BOE for three years, and I have so much more to give to our schools and our community.

I have helped achieve the following during my time on the Board of Ed:
• Installation of new District website and student information system with parent access to grades, attendance, etc.
• Creation and administration of Parent Survey; will be repeated annually
• Improved communication regarding budgets and referendum
• Prioritization and management of referendum/facilities projects
• Improved access to athletic fields for all Ridgewood youth
• Negotiation of contract with REA (teachers’ union) — ongoing

There is so much more I want to do, including:
• Improve communication
• Complete successful union negotiations
• Find more efficiencies in our budget
• Improve technology access and use by students & teachers
• Create improved methods for evaluating teachers

When I ran for the BOE three years ago, it wasn’t because of a single issue. Hot button issues come and go. Our schools need leaders who can explore a variety of complex issues with an open mind, and make thoughtful decisions, day in and day out, to balance the needs of our students with consideration for the taxpayers who fund our schools. You and I may not agree on every topic, but I have a proven track record of working hard on all the issues facing our schools, and I welcome alternate opinions.

The attached flyer gives more detail about me and my thoughts on the issues.

How you can help:

1. VOTE Laurie Goodman on Wednesday, April 27.

2. PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE NOW to your Ridgewood friends and neighbors.

Thank you,

Laurie
