Ridgewood an increasingly significant restaurant town; Cafe 37 a reason

Of all the salads, the kale salad is most virtuous. You choose it with a certain smugness; it’s a healthier-than-thou selection.And then a chef sneaks in a bit of hazelnut and almond in the vinaigrette dressing, and your kale salad is suddenly perky and flirty and coy, sparking unexpected interest from the manly man meat-eater at the table. Then, boom, before you know it, the kale salad is gone, consumed like so many crisp, fresh French fries. Kale. Who knew?
The kale salad ($12), with avocado, blood orange slices and feta, is just one of the unexpected surprises at Café 37. It’s also, not surprisingly, the most popular salad on the menu.
Ridgewood has long been a town with good dining options, but in recent years, the scene has become even more competitive and dynamic. Café 37, which opened in 2012, remains one of the reasons.

Village refrigerators post-Thanksgiving may tell a different story, but on village streets, there are fewer leftovers.
Leftover leaves, that is.
Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld has reported receiving positive resident input, and fewer complaints, thanks to Ridgewood’s new “no leaf left behind” program. The initiative includes the reintroduction of rakers and the outsourcing of pickups in the leafiest area of Ridgewood.
The ongoing effort is in response to residents’ chief complaint with village leaf pickup in past years: a mess of leaves left on the street.
Now, officials said, the village needs residents to help with the initiative, since many leaves have yet to fall.
So far this year, 13,933 cubic yards of leaves have been picked up. In 2013, the total number was 35,967 cubic yards, according to a Nov. 21 village email blast sent out by Sonenfeld.
“Most of our resident comments still relate to the schedule… As a reminder – if we get to your area earlier than we have indicated, we will be back,” she said. “The fact that the season is running better also has to do with each of you; following guidelines on what can be in the piles, as well as keeping the streets open so that we can work, makes us all more effective.”

Santa Claus dropped by unexpectedly at a home on South Irving Street on Thursday afternoon where 1-year old Declan and his 5-year old sister Delia were having a Thanksgiving meal with their grandparents.
Declan was a slightly unnerved by the surprise visit and kept his distance, but Delia sat right down near Santa, and had a nice 15 minute conversation with the fat man from the North Pole.
Santa did not arrive empty handed; Declan was the recipient of a toy vacuum cleaner, and Delia found a Play Doh kit when she unwrapped her present.
Mr. Claus arrived in a bright red SUV, which he told Delia he uses on every day of the year except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and was gone in a flash 15 minutes after his arrival.
As he waved goodbye to Declan and Delia, Santa did reveal that retired Ridgewood Police Department Captain and former Ridgewood Mayor Keith D. Killion was the person who wrote the North Pole and requested Santa make an early visit to South Irving Street.

PSE&G Prepares for Wintry Weather with Additional crews and equipment on hand to restore service

(NEWARK, NJ – Nov. 25, 2014) Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), New Jersey’s largest electric and gas utility, is preparing for the approaching winter storm system expected to hit the region tomorrow morning through Thanksgiving morning, bringing with it the potential for rain changing to heavy, wet snow.
In anticipation of the storm, PSE&G is ensuring that all available personnel are ready to respond beginning tomorrow morning. The utility is also arranging for additional tree crews to assist PSE&G’s own skilled workforce, and ensuring that additional supplies including poles and transformers are on hand.
While snow usually isn’t an issue for utilities, the possibility of a wet snow can increase the likelihood of downed tree limbs and wires, which causes power outages. Vehicles striking utility poles can also cause wires to come down.
PSE&G urges its customers to be cautious if they see downed lines. Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not touch anything that it might be in contact with.
To report downed wires or power outages, customers should call PSE&G’s Customer Service line at 1-800-436-PSEG. Customers can also report power outages and view the status of their outage by logging in to My Account on www.pseg.com, PSE&G’s mobile-friendly website.
PSE&G offers the following tips to customers to prepare:
Charge your cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices.
Fill up your car’s fuel tank.
Ensure you have a battery-powered radio and a supply of fresh batteries.
Check your supply of flashlights, blankets, nonperishable food and bottled water for everyone in your family.
Put your refrigerator and freezer at the coldest setting. Keep a blanket handy to throw over these appliances for added insulation. If electricity is interrupted, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.
Compile a list of emergency phone numbers, including PSE&G’s Customer Service line: 1-800-436-PSEG. Call this number to report power outages or downed wires.
PSE&G offers its customers a number of ways to stay in touch and stay informed before, during and after a storm. These tools can be found at www.pseg.com in the “Storm Center,” under “How you can stay connected.”
Sign up for My Account and bookmark the mobile-friendly homepage on your smart phone so it’s easy to report outages and check restoration progress.
To report power outages via text message, and receive outage updates by text and email, sign up for MyAlerts.
Updated every 15 minutes, PSE&G’s online “Outage Map” displays the location and status of power outages in PSE&G’s service territory.
The utility’s Twitter and Facebook pages also keep the public informed about our restoration progress. Sign up as a follower to monitor restoration process.

RHS Latin Team takes First Place n a test of Latin, Roman life, history and mythology

Ridgewood NJ, For the third consecutive year the RHS Advanced Latin Academic Team took first place in a test of Latin, Roman life, history and mythology with 13 New Jersey schools. The team members arePoyani Bavishi, Ben Bechtold, Charlotte Kahan, Sophie Simpson, Peter Psathas andAnthony Tokarz.
On November 8 all RHS teams spent the day at Yale University for a national competition. The Advanced team made it to the semi-final rounds but was defeated by the country’s top-ranked team, AMSA. TheIntermediate Team made a promising start in its first tournament. The Intermediate players were Sophie Simpson, Matthew Zachem, Audrey Gao and Vanita Sharma. The Advanced players were Henry Seifert, Elizabeth O’Keefe, James Psathas, Poyani Bavishi, Ben Bechtold, Charlotte Kahan, Sophie Simpson, Peter Psathas and Anthony Tokarz.
