Ridgewood Police Issue Residential Burglary Alert and Remind Residents on Summer Vacation Precautions
June 25,2014
Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood police Department responded to a home on Van Emburgh Ave near Route 17 on Tuesday 6/24/14. Entry was made to the home between the hours of 10:30am and 5:30pm by removing the first floor window air conditioner and climbing through the window. We remind our residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the Ridgewood Police Department. If you have a first floor window air conditioner it is a good idea to make sure it’s properly secured. Anyone with information please contact the Ridgewood Police Detective Bureau 201-251-4537.
With summer vacations approaching we remind residents to take some basic steps to prevent your home from becoming the target of a burglary.
• Have a neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers.
• During an extended vacation, make arrangements to have someone mow your lawn or trim your bushes.
• Leave lights on automatic timers.
• Notify the Ridgewood Police Department that you will be away.
• Ask a neighbor or friend to stop by your house periodically; have them open and close blinds, turn on different lights.
• Let your neighbors know when you are leaving and when you plan to return home and if you are expecting anybody at your house while you are away.
• Burglars want easy access to your home. Make sure all trees and shrubs are trimmed near all doors and windows where intruders might hide. Add exterior lights and consider lights that are activated by motion sensors.
• Burglars like to work quickly, so try to slow down their path into and around the house. You can accomplish this with:
1. deadbolt locks
2. window locks
3. bars placed in the tracks or track locks on all sliding glass doors and windows (if they would not impede your escape in an emergency)
4. locks on all doors and windows
• Don’t place the fact you are gone on your telephone answering machine.
• Don’t broadcast the fact that you’ll be away on Twitter, Facebook, craigslist, in your blog or anywhere else on the Internet.
• Don’t hide your keys on your property.
• A nosy neighbor is a burglar’s worst enemy. Get to know your neighbors and work out an arrangement to watch each other’s houses. Let them know when you will be gone and whether any deliveries are expected during your absence.
• Store jewelry and other valuables in a safe hiding place, such as a safety deposit box.
Go through each room and write down a list of possessions, including serial numbers. Take pictures of your valuables and keep them in a safe place or with a friend or relative. This will help in the event of a burglary.
If you would like a crime prevention survey of your home, contact the Ridgewood Police Department community Policing unit.

THE RECORD
RIDGEWOOD — Police will randomly administer sobriety tests to teens attending Friday’s Backwoods Dance, an annual party that is expected to draw around 1,100 students.
Last year, the dance — organized for Ridgewood High School students in Van Neste Park to both “teach and entertain” — turned away 10 attendees who tried to smuggle in alcohol, said David Zrike, co-founder of the event.
This year, 11 police officers will carry Breathalyzers with them.
“We allow the police to be in charge, and they feel it would be a good deterrent” to pre-dance drinking by some students, Zrike said.
A letter will be going home this week to parents of high school students about the dance and the use of Breathalyzers.
After seeing teenagers being arrested outside a party five years ago in Ridgewood, Zrike contacted the high school’s former principal, Jack Lorenz, to organize safe events to keep the village’s young people out of trouble.

THE RECORD
PAGES: 1 2 > DISPLAY ON ONE PAGE
In the last three months alone, North Jersey taxpayers have been put on the hook for $1.5 million in payouts to eight police officers — including five chiefs — to cover thousands of hours in unused sick, vacation and compensatory time.
Some of the payouts include:
Vincent Caruso, Lodi: $342,381
Thomas Johnson, Elmwood Park: $228,141
Arthur O’Keefe, Englewood: $182,542
Gary Giardina, Clifton: $134,000
Frank Papapietro, New Milford: $158,000
Matthew Paz, Passaic: $100,000*
*Acting chief, city figures are estimated
The recent payouts approved in Bergen and Passaic counties are just the latest examples of a system that critics say is out of control, and a burden on taxpayers. In fact, some municipalities have been forced to borrow millions to make the payments. The Record has reported on six-figure payouts from at least a half-dozen other North Jersey public employees, including school administrators, in recent years. And there are more to come.
Indeed, these perks have become a rite of passage for some retiring public employees — Lodi Police Chief Vincent Caruso is getting $342,381, for instance — and other longtime workers still on the job, despite repeated criticism from Governor Christie and fiscal watchdogs who have called for the benefit to be repealed entirely.
“These six-figure payouts are forcing other people to go without,” said Jerry Cantrell, president of Common Sense Institute of New Jersey, a non-partisan research-and-education non-profit that receives support from individuals, private foundations and businesses. “If those dollars weren’t being expended on these things, they could be going toward legitimate purposes, like fixing potholes.”
State lawmakers have been unable — or unwilling — to strike a deal and get a handle on the substantial payouts. And without comprehensive, statewide reform, local officials have been left to negotiate a solution with employees on their own. So far, those efforts have come piecemeal and vary from town to town. In the end, it means the payouts keep coming.

We all know that sharing and social media come hand in hand. People share everything online, whether it is a birth of their child or a new kitchen upgrade. Today, a new trend is gaining popularity quicker than ever in the sharing universe: anonymous secrets-sharing mobile apps.
Apps like Truth and Whisper make it easier than ever to anonymously post secrets online without the fear of being judged or having direct consequences. Users can simply write a secret, pick an image to go with it, and share it for millions to see.
Since its release two years ago, the anonymous, secret-sharing app Whisper has become hugely popular. Today, it reaches 3.5 billion page views per month. Although Whisper’s main demographic is comprised of 18-24-year-olds, there are still a number of teens using the application. Given its steady increase in popularity, many more teens are expected to join.

Readers Question the wisdom of reducing traffic lanes at Garber Square

Readers Question the wisdom of reducing traffic lanes at Garber Square
Would be interested in knowing how much additional funds were needed to make Wilsey and Garber Squares into one lanes vs. repaving existing setup. Not completely sure what they are trying to achieve at this location with the narrow roadways — is speeding/pedestrian safety a major issue around that stretch?
Starting Wednesday, May 7th, paving construction work will begin on the West Side at Wilsey and Garber Squares from Godwin Avenue to under the train trestle on Franklin Avenue. Expect traffic congestion in this area for the next 3 months during construction. To avoid delays, we suggest the use of alternate streets to get across the train tracks – Ackerman Avenue or W. Glen Avenue.
