Readers Question the wisdom of reducing traffic lanes at Garber Square

Would be interested in knowing how much additional funds were needed to make Wilsey and Garber Squares into one lanes vs. repaving existing setup. Not completely sure what they are trying to achieve at this location with the narrow roadways — is speeding/pedestrian safety a major issue around that stretch?

Starting Wednesday, May 7th, paving construction work will begin on the West Side at Wilsey and Garber Squares from Godwin Avenue to under the train trestle on Franklin Avenue. Expect traffic congestion in this area for the next 3 months during construction. To avoid delays, we suggest the use of alternate streets to get across the train tracks – Ackerman Avenue or W. Glen Avenue.TaylorMade R1 Driversshow?id=mjvuF8ceKoQ&bids=205477

  1. They are NARROWING to ONE LANE in each direction???

I thought they were redistributing the lanes such that the TWO lanes heading into town were wider.

BTW I think EITHER proposal an unnecessary waste of money – just repave it. I wonder if it is too late to mount a campaign to stop it.

  2. I suspect the intent is to protect pedestrians from vehicles making right turns on to Broad street south bound.
Do you remember we had a circle @ the corner of Ridgewood and Broad st. that has been modernized?
Do you remember that the south side of Ridgewood ave and Oak st @ Van neste has been modernized?
Of course you don’t remember. You just moved here and do not want to slow down since you’re in a big hurry to get nowhere!

  3. I heard a rumor there was going to be some kind if bike lane installed there. The village engineer is an avid cyclist rides his bike to work a lot. Just a “coincidence” I think not.

  4. I wonder whether all of the 4th of July floats will make it through the underpass with only one lane!

  5. Reducing to one lane will create a traffic nightmare on both sides of town.

  6. Actually pedestrian safety has been issue ever since the train station renovation was completed. When you exit the train, the only choices to cross Broad are at underpass, or way down at the end by Ridgewood Ave. Given that the train stops up by the underpass, most people exit there – and it is really dangerous trying to cross that street. However I don’t think adding aggravated drivers to the mix is going to help anything.

  7. #2, I have lived here for a long time and do not remember a traffic circle at W. Ridgewood and Broad. Please describe.
