Ridgewood should have preserved elements of old building
JANUARY 9, 2015 LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 2015, 9:54 AM
THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
Building elements should have been preserved
To the editor:
I’m writing about your recent article “Ridgewood debate at Hudson Street lot was ‘past versus parking'” (The Ridgewood News, Dec. 26, page A1).
I’m a former Ridgewood resident who was too young in 1993 to be civically minded and involved in the parking garage debate.
In retrospect, my question for the town is why weren’t elements of the old fire house preserved? Even after the structure was torn down, parts of the original building could have been preserved, even if just a piece of a brick wall or the building’s cornerstone. Imagine how a dull, boring asphalt lot would look if cars passed through the building’s original arches to reach parking spaces.
I think there was a failure on the part of town leaders to think outside the box. If there is any follow-up article I would love to see similar questions asked.
Reader says The Village Council and the Planning Board need to step up and make decisions that are in the best interest of a vibrant and healthy village.
The Citizens For a Better Ridgewood (CBR) website states that the group:
-Favors economic growth for our downtown
-Favors new housing that is appropriate in scale
-Favors new housing designated for empty nesters and special needs residents, where there is an established need
-Favors new parking solutions that support commerce
-Favors more open space and athletic fields for our youth sports
That all sounds good. But, their public actions suggest different agendas, at least for some of the founders. Specifically, they have opposed ALL new multi-family housing projects in Ridgewood, regardless of “scale”. Clearly, we don’t need all three of the proposed developments in town. But, it is also clear that one or two of the proposed housing projects would benefit economic growth in the CBD and would help advance the parking solution in town. It is also clear that the most desirable projects would be those that are moderate in overall size, with high-end units that cater to young professional couples or empty nesters, who wish to downsize. Such projects would have less impact on our infrastructure and schools than when families with children move into existing homes in Ridgewood as empty nesters leave town each year, when their children graduate from RHS.
So, why doesn’t the CBR come out and publicly endorse one of the proposed projects? Or, if they support a specific project, but would like to see minor modifications, why don’t they tell us which project and what modifications they recommend?
The reason is that they don’t really want ANY new multi-family housing! Why? Two reasons… which the Ridgewood News has been remiss in reporting and the CBR has failed to disclose.
1) Amy Bourque is one of the founders of the CBR and is its most vocal advocate. Her family is the long-standing owner an existing multi-family housing development that would be most adversely impacted by ANY new multi-family housing in Ridgewood. This is a major conflict of interest that she should have disclosed long ago. Her failure to do so openly raises serious questions about her motivations.
2) Several CBR supporters have repeatedly and publicly expressed concern that new multi-family housing will attract more foreign families to Ridgewood, who wish to take advantage of our school system for a few years, potentially with an inappropriate number of family members or more than one family in a single unit. This concern was clearly expressed at a recent public meeting. However, the press inexplicably glossed over the comment.
The debate over multi-family housing projects has gone on for far too long in Ridgewood. We need SOMETHING. The Village Council and the Planning Board need to step up and make decisions that are in the best interest of a vibrant and healthy village. Perhaps a little honesty from those who have been stalling the debate out would help residents understand the CBR’s real motivations and allow the Village to move forward.
People are fleeing N.J. faster than any other state, moving company says

Nearly two of every three families making an interstate move involving New Jersey last year were leaving the Garden State, the highest rate in the country.
New Jersey had the greatest percentage of outbound moves of any state nationally last year with almost 65 percent departing, according to a company which bills itself as the largest transporter of household goods in the country.
The Garden State has led the nation in outward migration for the fourth time in five years.
In all, United said it tracked 4,003 moves out of New Jersey in 2014 compared to 2,169 inbound.
Nearly half of those leaving New Jersey were bound for Florida (15 percent), California (14), Texas (9) and North Carolina (7.5), spokeswoman Melissa Sullivan told NJ Advance Media.
Retirement and jobs were the top reasons to leave the state last year, according to a United Survey of departing New Jerseyans.
About 42 percent reported leaving for a new job or company transfer. Forty-one percent attributed their move to retirement. More than half (56 percent) of people leaving New Jersey were over the age of 55, with 22 percent older than 65.

Americans on the move want warmth, affordability: reports
By Mark Guarino
CHICAGO Fri Jan 2, 2015 2:03pm EST
(Reuters) – Americans moving out of state in 2014 were most likely to head to places that were warmer and more affordable, such as the South and Southwest, according to studies by two major moving companies.
The 47th annual report by Allied Van Lines showed that Illinois topped the list of states people are moving away from with 1,372 net moves, followed by Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan and New Jersey. The states have remained in the top five since 2010, the company said.
In its 38th annual report, released Friday, United Van Lines reports that New Jersey, New York, Illinois, North Dakota and West Virginia represented the states their clients exited the most last year. Illinois, where outbound moves represented 63 percent of total moves for the state, has ranked among the top five for the past six years, the company says.
Michael Stoll, an economist with the department of public policy at the University of California in Los Angeles, said in a statement for United that migration patterns reflected long-term movement to the South and Southwest, where housing costs are lower, climates are less severe and job growth has been at or above the national average.
United said Oregon was the most preferred destination for its clients, followed by South Carolina, North Carolina, Vermont and Florida. The company said 38 percent of its clients moving to Oregon were going for a new job while 29 percent cited retirement.
Allied clients were most likely to move to Texas, Florida, Arizona, South Carolina and Colorado, the company said. The company said the most popular destinations were generally the same but the number of moves has increased with California, Oregon and Washington state showing the greatest increases for inbound moves.
“Trends demonstrate a heavy movement toward warm-weather, retirement-friendly states,” Lesli Bertoli, general manager and vice president of Allied, said in a statement.

THE RECORD
Home values continued to cool off in October, with prices in the New York metropolitan area up only 2 percent from a year earlier, the Standard & Poor’s Case-Shiller index said Tuesday.
Nationally, single-family home values were up about 4.6 percent in that period, a slowdown from last year’s pace, and evidence that a full recovery from the housing crash is still out of reach. Home values in the region and the nation remain 17 to 18 percent below their peaks in mid-2006, and are at the levels seen in mid- to late-2004, Case-Shiller said.
Case-Shiller does not follow home values county by county, but New Jersey Realtors, the statewide trade group, said that single-family home values in Bergen County rose 2 percent in October from a year earlier, to a median $459,000. In Passaic County, prices were flat, at a median $295,000.
The Case-Shiller figures follow other recent housing data that David Blitzer, head of the index committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices, called “somber.”

Annual Social Service drive fills holiday needs, wishes
December 24, 2014 Last updated: Wednesday, December 24, 2014, 10:54 AM
By Jodi Weinberger
This month, dozens of children will receive toys and other gifts during their holiday celebrations thanks to the Social Service Association of Ridgewood and Vicinity (SSA).
The non-profit organization recently wrapped up its annual donation collection, just one of the many ways it has been serving northwest Bergen County since 1913.
On Dec. 10 in the basement of the Upper Ridgewood Community Church, volunteers sorted through piles of clothes and toys that will be delivered to more than 130 children from the village, Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus, Midland Park, Waldwick and Wyckoff.
Beginning in September, SSA reaches out to families who have children high school age and younger and asks them to fill out a list of needs and wishes from the children, said Denise Vollkommer, the organization’s exective director.
Needs include shirts, sweatshirts, jeans, jackets, tights and socks, and wishes can be items like toys, games or gift cards.
SSA then gives the lists to schools, businesses and other private sponsors who fulfill the purchasing.

A security scare at Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School prompted many families to keep their kids home on Tuesday, despite assurances from school officials that there was no actual threat, officials said.
More than 200 students were absent, or about 20 percent of all students, which was an unusually high number even for the day before Christmas vacation, said district Superintendent Raymond Gonzalez on Friday. Some stayed home because of rumors about a threat that was linked to an online book written by a student, officials said.
Gonzalez declined to say what the student wrote or what prompted the scare, but the school did investigate and found “no credible information to support the claims,” he said.
“No specific threats were directed at any of our schools or personnel,” Gonzalez said. “However, local, national and world events have heightened our collective sensitivity to matters of safety in our school.
“As such, the school district takes all matters seriously and works cooperatively with law enforcement to investigate public concerns when they arise to ensure that our schools are safe places for all students.”
Officials declined to identify the student and said that there was no need to discipline the teen.

* Multifamily housing helps to put the state on pace for its best year since 2006
By KATHLEEN LYNN
Driven by multifamily projects, home building in New Jersey rose in November, putting the state’s new-home production on track for its strongest year since 2006.
Through November, builders have obtained permits for 25,451 housing units, about 15 percent ahead of the same period last year. The state has been climbing out of a deep housing crash that brought home construction to lows not seen since World War II — about 13,000 units a year.
Three in five new housing units this year have been in multifamily buildings, mostly rentals, a striking shift from earlier suburban development patterns in the state. The sector is so active that some analysts have asked whether there might be an oversupply of new rentals on the market soon.
Patrick O’Keefe, an economist with the accounting firm CohnReznick in Roseland and New York, said New Jersey multifamily permits have fallen off in recent months, compared with the summer months — possibly a result of builders worried about creating a glut. But, he said, the North Jersey market is likely to continue benefiting from a spillover of demand from New York City, where rents tend to be higher.
O’Keefe predicts building permits in the state to rise again in 2015, to about 30,000 units.

WIRE SERVICE
Here’s the good news: Homes are selling. If you’re a seller, now is a good time to put your home on the market, as long as you’re realistic about your price.
Pricing a home correctly means understanding what kind of seller you are. We typically see three kinds: the desperate and anxious who must sell as soon as possible; the “pie-in-the-sky” homeowner with an inflated view of his home’s value; and the realist who understands what the market will bear and is willing to price his home accordingly.
Which seller are you? Before you list your home in 2015, figure that out. Then consider adopting my classic New Year’s resolutions for home sellers:
