The rise of ‘selfie lice’

As if you didn’t have enough to worry about with the new school year starting, now there’s this: “selfie lice.” In recent days, the Internet has been abuzz with fear over the latest scourge to hit our borders, and it has to do with social media and those pesky little critters that tend to latch onto kids’ hair.

The concern is that gaggles of tweens and teens with smartphones are touching heads while snapping and sharing pictures of themselves, causing a rise in lice transmissions.

No one seems to know where the idea originated, but some point to the selfie-seen-around-the-world that Ellen Degeneres took at last year’s Oscars. That led to snarky comments online about how close those beautiful heads — Jennifer Lawrence! Brad Pitt! Julia Roberts! Bradley Cooper! — appeared to be to each other and speculation about what might happen if any one of them had lice.

Everyone seemed to have forgotten about this for a while but as the summer ended and people began to think about school again, comments from a pediatrician in Wisconsin who spoke about seeing a rise in lice cases among teens went viral. Soon, experts from across the country, from cities big and small, were weighing in and saying that they, too, were alarmed about selfie lice.

It sounds bad, but there’s no need to panic. Let’s separate fact from fiction. First, experts say transmitting lice while taking a selfie is technically possible, but since lice cannot fly or jump, they’d have to crawl, and that can take a while, so you’d probably have to be head-to-head with your gal pal for longer than a few seconds.

Ridgewood again exploring full-day kindergarten

RIDGEWOOD — The Board of Education is once again exploring the pros and cons of offering a full-day kindergarten program in the district, but officials are concerned that coming up with the money to do so could be problematic.

Officials claim a full-day kindergarten program would require 10 additional teachers with an estimated cost of $1 million-plus.

Providing daylong kindergarten has been a longtime goal for Ridgewood’s educators, said Sheila Brogan, president of the village’s school board.

“We are one of the few districts that don’t have full-day kindergarten, and we realize it would be an enhancement,” Brogan said. “The question for us is: Is it feasible?”

The school board discussed the prospect of expanding its offerings during a meeting held late last month.

N.J. students offered reprieve from statewide exams

High school juniors in New Jersey will be allowed to forgo controversial state tests in English language arts — exams many had already been skipping — if they take other high-level exams in the subject, the state education commissioner announced Wednesday.

The change comes amid a backlash from parents and educators who argue that too much testing is creating stress and taking up valuable teaching time. Many parents refused to let their children take state tests last spring, even though the state required them for all students in Grades 3 to 11 in math and English.

“We are cognizant of testing time and demands,” Education Commissioner David Hespe said Wednesday. “After lots of conversations, we think this is a smart move and the right way to reflect that students in 11th grade are taking challenging course work.”

RIDGEWOOD — The opening of the 2015 football season is a week away for Ridgewood High School, and there is still plenty of jockeying for positions as the team prepares to break a five-game losing streak that put a major damper on the 2014 campaign.

Before they get going for real, the Maroons will play a game scrimmage tonight against a Ramapo team that should be a strong test for the defense. The 7 o’clock tilt should facilitate the finalization of starting units over the first three quarters.

A couple of spots opened up due to preseason circumstances. Senior fullback/linebacker Cooper Telesco will be sidelined for the entire season after undergoing surgery for a torn labrum in July. Two-way lineman Terrel Stephen moved to Indiana over the summer, leaving Ridgewood with some gaping holes.

“Any time you lose arguably your two best players it is a big blow,” RHS head coach Chuck Johnson said. “What I’m most pleased about is that this group is not letting that define them. They’ve stepped up to the challenge of carrying on, and they’ve worked very hard to prepare for this season.”

Its that time of the year School’s Open so Drive Carefully

Ridgewood NJ, Every fall, over 55 million children across the United States head back to school. With 13 percent of those children typically walking or biking to their classes, drivers need to be especially vigilant for pedestrians before and after school hours. The afternoon hours are particularly dangerous – over the last decade, nearly one in four child pedestrian fatalities occurred between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

DSCF2090

According to AAA first and foremost drivers need to slow down. Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A pedestrian is struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster.
Come to a complete stop. Research shows that more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks before proceeding.
Eliminate distractions. Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of crashing. And children can be quick, crossing the road unexpectedly or emerging suddenly between two parked cars. Reduce risk by not using your cell phone or eating while driving, for example.
DSCF2093
Reverse responsibly. Every vehicle has blind spots. Check for children on the sidewalk, in the driveway and around your vehicle before slowly backing up. Teach your children to never play in, under or around vehicles.
Watch for bicycles. Children on bikes are often inexperienced, unsteady and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and a bicyclist. If your child rides a bicycle to school, require that he or she wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet on every ride.
Talk to your teen. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, and nearly one in four fatal crashes involving teen drivers occur during the after-school hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Ridgewood H.S. soccer marathon for charity on Saturday, Sept. 5

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Tomorrow, the Ridgewood High School boys and girls soccer programs will host their second annual “Dawn to Dusk” marathon soccer match to benefit two local charities, Gear Up for Owen and Support Rachel Grygiel-Loughlin, and to help raise money for the RHS soccer programs.

This year’s Soccer-A-Thon will be an eight-hour event, with kickoff planned for 8 a.m. at the Ridgewood High School Stadium field, and play will continue until 4 p.m.

The RHS boys soccer program is raising funds to support 6-year-old Owen Betrus, son of George Washington Middle School teacher Rob Betrus.

Owen was diagnosed at birth with quadriplegic cerebral palsy. He also was diagnosed with cortical visual impairment just before his first birthday, and with intractable epilepsy at age 3. More info on how to help support Owen is available online at gofundme.com/gearup4owen.

For the Ridgewood girls soccer program, the 2015 Dawn to Dusk fundraiser is very personal, as the program will be helping a Maroon alumna who is in need. A portion of the proceeds raised through the Soccer-A-Thon will be donated to RHS Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Rachel Grygiel-Loughlin.

This past May, Rachel was faced with the tragic and sudden loss of her husband, Matthew. The couple were married in July 2014, and Rachel is expecting their first child in November. Dawn to Dusk proceeds will go to an online fund that has been set up in Matthew’s memory to help relieve some of the stress and financial burden Rachel is currently enduring. For more info on how to help, visit youcaring.com/rachel-grygiel-loughlin-360921.

RHS soccer players will donate their time and energy, and they will solicit sponsorships based on eight hours of play. Parents will be contributing time as well, helping to organize the event and support the players. Numerous businesses have agreed to sponsor the event, including Tarleton & Family Landscaping Co. (TLC), The Ideal Supply Co., The Valley Hospital, Stifel Investment Banking, Thomas Flint Landscape Design & Development, Clemente Orthodontics, Keller Williams/The Nuber Team, Park West Tavern, Ridgewood Tips From Town, Fitness 1-2-1 Personal Training, Ridgewood Physical Therapy, C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home, Skinners Landscaping and Bedra Intelligent Wires.

According to parent organizer Jeanmarie Mulholland, “We are expecting this event to be a tremendous success, not only in the amount of funds we raise but also in creating a sense of caring and camaraderie within the soccer community.”

Ridgewood school district exploring move to full-day kindergarten

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

The years-old question of full-day kindergarten for Ridgewood schools was once again raised at last week’s Board of Education meeting.

However, such a change isn’t likely to come to Ridgewood for a while, according to school district officials.

While some, like board trustee James Morgan, say they understand the value and importance of full-day kindergarten, they realize that it isn’t a feasible option at this point in time.

“Full-day kindergarten is one of the most effective methods for teaching young children,” Morgan said. “It’s a great idea, but the major question is how do we fund it?”

The issue lies in the board’s budget limitations, Morgan said.

Were full-day kindergarten to be instituted, about 10 new teachers would need to be hired, each making around $75,000 per year, according to Morgan. Once these amounts are factored in with the cost of resources, the price jumps to over $1 million per year, which is an amount that the board just doesn’t have at this point, officials said.

Morgan said there are major hurdles to surpass if full-day kindergarten were ever to be truly discussed.

Ridgewood Soccer ready to play up to potential

RIDGEWOOD — It’s the time of year when optimism sweeps across the high school sports world, making every player and coach think this could be the fall for a surprising turnaround, a record-setting season or even a championship run.

The feeling is no different around the Ridgewood boys soccer team, and with a talented defense leading an overall balanced squad, it has good reason to be excited for the 2015 campaign. But with the first five contests of the season scheduled against Freedom Division foes, the Maroons are well aware that all positive feelings could be erased with a bad two-week stretch.

“What we’re really focused on are the first five games in our [division] because that will decide everything else,” Ridgewood head coach Joe Gyulay, in his third year at the helm, said before practice Tuesday afternoon.

A good start is paramount for a Maroons team that experienced an uneven season in 2014, several times rising to meet stiff challenges but ultimately enduring a difficult 6-10-3 campaign.

Ridgewood played its best against Freedom Division champion Northern Highlands, tying the Highlanders in a home contest early in the year and then taking them to overtime on the road before dropping a 2-1 decision in late October.

Village Engineer Christopher Rutishauser had told Village Council members concrete curbs and driveway cuts would be including in the repaving project so that the street would be “sidewalk ready.”

Reportedly, residents on the street did not want the concrete and told the Village Manager so.

Back to school shopping shifting to after school starts

At Ped-Agree Shoes in Wyckoff, owners Catherine Mattei and Luanne Rush were busy last week helping parents outfit their children with new shoes for school.

In Westwood, at the Ginger Kids clothing store, owner Sue Bahng said she loves back-to-school season. “This is when the kids come in with renewed eagerness for the fresh new year.”

But Ped-Agree Shoes, Ginger Kids and other retailers in North Jersey and around the country are seeing a shift in the rhythms of this annual ritual. A Labor Day that falls late this year, on Sept. 7, compared to Sept. 1 last year, and changing shopping habits are pushing a lot of back-to-school shopping into September, after kids are already back at school.

Retail research firm The NPD Group this summer admonished retailers that they need to rethink their marketing to respond to a changing back-to-school season. A survey by the firm showed that a majority of shoppers don’t get serious about back-to-school shopping until August, with much of the spending occurring in September and even October.

A look at where the money goes

$68 billion: Total Americans will spend on back-to-school and back-to-college purchases this year

$630: average amount parents will spend for children in Grades K-12

$217.82: Average amount for clothes, K-12

$197.24: Average amount for electronics, K-12

$117.56: Average amount for shoes, K-12

$97.74: Average amount for school supplies, K-12

$899: Average amount parents will spend on college students

$126: Average amount for dorm or college apartment furnishings

29%: Portion of parents who plan to spend more for back to school this year.

30%: Parents who waited to start shopping until one to two weeks before school starts

42%: Amount that average back-to-school spending has risen over the past 10 years

Source: National Retail Federation

“When so many consumers are planning to do their back-to-school shopping in the months not traditionally considered part of the season by retailers, it’s time to break with tradition and change the way we market and measure this shopping season,” said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst for NPD, in reporting the findings.

Should N.J. parents of college students insure the cost of tuition?

For a few hundred dollars a semester, some of the pricier private colleges in the United States have long offered tuition insurance — policies that protect families and schools if a student withdraws for medical reasons.

Starting this year, however, tuition insurance is available to any family in New Jersey — no matter where a student goes to school. The company selling it also is offering more expensive plans that cover other “unforeseen reasons” for midsemester withdrawals, including “poor grades or a crisis at home.”

But is it worth the money?

The top executive at Allianz Global Assistance, which won New Jersey’s approval to sell the policies, said the state is ripe for the insurance, given that its tuition costs — even for public colleges — are among the highest in the nation, topping $25,000 a year if a student lives on campus. He said it makes sense to insure what is likely a family’s largest investment, after a home.

“We insure risk, and we saw a market for this,” said Joe Mason, the company’s chief marketing officer. “College isn’t a small investment. You insure your house, your boat, why not college?”
