>Jim Chanos Trashes Solar Energy as ‘Hot Air

>Jim Chanos Trashes Solar Energy as ‘Hot Air
By Mary Pilon

Jim Chanos of Kynikos Associates (FYI — that’s Greek for “cynic”) and famed for shorting Enron took to the stage to talk about why he’s short green energy. In a presentation called “Alternative Energy: Does Solar + Wind = Hot Air?” Chanos joked he would “upset the greenies,” by arguing that while there’s a lot of enthusiasm about green energy, the companies in the sector today don’t yet solve those problems.

Wind and solar are “not capable” of real cost-effective ways of meeting energy demands, he says. “Wind and solar are not efficient.”As for job growth, he says that the boom of green jobs could be overblown, as most of the jobs generated are construction jobs, not in technology. “Put your hand on your wallet,” he says, as many of the green jobs are merely putting people back to work who were employed in housing.

>Ridgewood Run getting up to speed

RIDGEWOOD — Over its 36 years, the Fred d’Elia Ridgewood Run hasn’t become one of the most prestigious and popular road racing events in the region by standing still.

The organizers at North Jersey Masters are always looking for ways to improve the race-day experience for the more than 3,000 runners who compete each Memorial Day. This year, race director Cheryl Moses and her crew have made a few changes and additions – some subtle and some obvious.

One that will be impossible to miss is the 17-foot Jumbotron screen at the finish line on Linwood Avenue.

“This is something that’s done at some of the New York Road Runners Club races in the city and some of the higher-end races, and we wanted to bring that touch of something special, something else to add to an already really great event,” Moses said. “It will be cool because the runners will be able to see themselves as they’re coming down Linwood Avenue toward the finish line, so, hopefully, that gives them the incentive to kick it a little harder.”

>Construction to start on West Bergen Mental Healthcare group home

>News Construction to start on new group home
Friday, May 27, 2011BY KELLY EBBELSSTAFF WRITER
The Ridgewood News

Construction on a new group home owned by West Bergen Mental Healthcare for people with Asperger’s syndrome will begin within two weeks, it was announced at a Village Council work session Wednesday evening.

Michael Tozzoli, West Bergen’s chief executive officer, said the organization will provide neighbors with monthly updates on the project.West Bergen currently operates a four-person group home on the property to be developed, at 234 S. Broad Street. That building will be demolished and a new facility will be built to house 10 residents and one live-in caretaker.

Construction should be complete within 10 to 12 months, Tozzoli said.In a 3-2 vote last winter, the council approved West Bergen’s request to redevelop the site, despite strenuous opposition from neighboring residents, who said communication had been insufficient in advance of that vote, and that the development could hurt property values, among other concerns

>Foreclosure Sales account for 28% of all home sales

>Foreclosure sales slow, but remain very highHuge backlog of distressed properties means any housing recovery is a long way away

By ALEX VEIGAupdated 5/26/2011 11:41:32 AM ET

LOS ANGELES -Sales of homes in some stage of foreclosure declined in the first three months of the year, but they still accounted for 28 percent of all home sales — a share nearly six times higher than what it would be in a healthy housing market.

Foreclosure sales, which include homes purchased after they received a notice of default or were repossessed by lenders, hit the highest share of overall sales in a year during the first quarter, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.

>Christie deals Cap & Trade a death blow

> Christie deals Cap & Trade a death blow

Trenton NJ –  Governor Christie dealt Cap & Trade a death blow – one that could well signal not just the end of RGGI but the end to any effort to implement a job-destroying Cap & Trade energy tax in America.

At a press conference today at the statehouse in Trenton, Governor Christie announced his decision to use his executive authority to withdraw New Jersey from the ten-state cap and trade or cap and tax scheme.

“RGGI is nothing more than a tax on electricity, a tax on our residents and on businesses with no discernible effect on our environment,” Christie said. “We remain completely committed to the idea that we have a responsibility to make the environment of our state and world better. We’re not going to do it by participating in gimmicky programs that don’t work.

>The police should spend a week ticketing pedestrians who cross illegally and enforce that law

>The police should spend a week ticketing pedestrians who cross illegally and enforce that law

I’m aware of the law too but when many drivers fail to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks at all, ticketing a driver for not waiting until the pedestrian gets onto the sidewalk is kind of ridiculous.

On the other hand, what are the police going to do about people jaywalking all over E. Ridgewood Avenue? I was driving down E. Ridgewood Ave the other day and literally had to stop every few feet for people running across the street, coming out from in between cars on either side of the street, especially on the block by the movie theatre. It’s no wonder drivers have trouble observing crosswalks on E. Ridgewood Ave….the whole street is treated as a crosswalk and it’s very difficult to drive, dodge pedestrians every few feet and also anticipate the crosswalk ahead. And the worst offenders aren’t the teens but the moms holding the hands of their little kids and making a run for it from wherever they happen to have parked.

The police should spend a week ticketing pedestrians who cross illegally and enforce that law. It would also be helpful to have a traffic cop stationed by the movie theatre during peak hours to help people cross.
