When he was 3 years old, Mohammad Abdelhamid told his mother that he was going to be a basketball player and – like the pros – buy a mansion.

His mother, Azza Abdelziz, took his ambitions to heart and raised him as a well-rounded athlete. He now plays three sports at Fort Lee High School – soccer, basketball and baseball – as well as participating in a private soccer club that travels all over the region.

Abdelziz, who laughed off the promise of a mansion, was full of encouragement Sunday as she watched him take on Paramus Catholic in the Jack Reilly Holiday Basketball Tournament, a season opener for a number of local teams hosted at Fort Lee High School. Also in attendance were relatives, friends and recruiters taking in the action as the warm bodies on the court pushed up the temperature in the gym.

But Abdelziz deserved as much applause from her son as she was heaping on him.

The sacrifices many parents in the crowd have made on behalf of their children’s athletic careers are as remarkable for their size as for their duration. Abdelziz, for example, said that over the past 10 years, she has hosted relatives at her house less and less due to her son’s game and practice schedule. She has also stuck with her job as a school bus driver because the hours are conducive to high school sports.

A security scare at Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School prompted many families to keep their kids home on Tuesday, despite assurances from school officials that there was no actual threat, officials said.

More than 200 students were absent, or about 20 percent of all students, which was an unusually high number even for the day before Christmas vacation, said district Superintendent Raymond Gonzalez on Friday. Some stayed home because of rumors about a threat that was linked to an online book written by a student, officials said.

Gonzalez declined to say what the student wrote or what prompted the scare, but the school did investigate and found “no credible information to support the claims,” he said.

“No specific threats were directed at any of our schools or personnel,” Gonzalez said. “However, local, national and world events have heightened our collective sensitivity to matters of safety in our school.

“As such, the school district takes all matters seriously and works cooperatively with law enforcement to investigate public concerns when they arise to ensure that our schools are safe places for all students.”

Officials declined to identify the student and said that there was no need to discipline the teen.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Jack Lorenz’s family – his wife, Karen, and sons Jake and Matthew – drove 1,000 miles this week to be in the village as residents honored the former Ridgewood High School (RHS) principal.

Monday, Dec. 22, was proclaimed John “Jack” Lorenz Day by Mayor Paul Aronsohn following an emotional two-hour event in the Ridgewood Library to celebrate the educator’s life.

Lorenz, who served at the helm of RHS from 2006 to 2011, died on Nov. 29 in his home in Alabama.

“It’s very comforting,” said Karen Lorenz as she greeted the steady stream of residents filling up the library’s auditorium.

Jake and Matthew Lorenz each wore one of Lorenz’s ties from the nonprofit organization Save the Children for the occasion; Matthew’s had a smiling cartoon sun on its front, Jake’s was covered in lopsided musical notes and dancing stick figures.

The family had not been back to Ridgewood since Lorenz resigned from RHS in 2011.

“It’s cool to see everything he’s done and although it’s on bad terms, we’re very proud to be here,” Jake Lorenz said.

RHS Assistant Principal Basil Pizzuto opened the ceremony.

Publishing giant Pearson Inc. is set to rake in billions of dollars in profits related to the implementation of the Common Core standards, but the corporation is now dealing with legal problems exposing some of its suspicious methods that have led to its status as the King of Common Core. snip As Breitbart News reported in December of 2013, the Pearson Foundation agreed to a $7.7 million settlement with the state of New York after accusations by the state’s attorney general that the foundation helped develop Common Core-aligned courses for Pearson, Inc., its corporate parent.

Some schools in North Jersey dropping midterms, finals

THE RECORD

It looked as if Wayne High School students would miss the equivalent of 30 days of new instruction this year because of tests, trips, assemblies and snow days.

So school officials did something radical; they got rid of midterm and final exams.

“Kids go to school because they enjoy learning; they want to explore and they want to learn about themselves,” said Michael Ben-David, assistant superintendent of Wayne schools. “That doesn’t come from taking [tests] that take up large chunks of the school year.”

Wayne is one of several North Jersey school districts that have dropped midterms and finals, a staple of education for as long as anyone can remember. The motive is partly to regain instruction time as standardized tests take up more days each year. But school officials say they’re also tossing out the traditional, high-stakes exams as they look at the larger issue of how to determine what students have learned.

Acting state Education Commissioner David Hespe said the decision to drop teacher-generated midterms and final exams is innovative and “makes perfect sense for districts.” All school districts in New Jersey, he noted, are already required to give end-of-course exams provided by the state, which could make midterms and finals redundant.

Credit agency: Declining Ticket Income  with End of NJ’s red light camera pilot program is a ‘credit negative’ for towns

THE RECORD

A Wall Street credit ratings agency called the end of the state’s five-year red light traffic ticket pilot program a “credit negative” for preventing local governments from implementing new revenue streams.

The controversial cameras, which allow municipalities to mail tickets to motorists who run red lights, generated millions in revenue for the 25 municipalities that installed them, including several in North Jersey.

Moody’s analyzed the end of the program in its weekly credit outlook report released Friday. The credit ratings agency said the New Jersey legislature could have acted to renew the program, which ended on Tuesday. Moody’s also took issue with New York legislators repealing a law authorizing the use of speed cameras near schools in Nassau County.

The “credit negative” designation is an analysis of an event and differs from a credit downgrade, which could affect the state’s ability to borrow money.

“These developments are credit negative because they further constrain governments’ ability to implement new revenue streams at a time when these governments are facing property tax limits, uneven sales tax growth and anti-tax sentiment,” the weekly credit outlook said.
